MIKU.

Fucking amazing sushi.

10 Bay Street (at Queens Quay)

Can't say enough about how great this place is. Read about it in Toronto Life recently and tried it a couple of weeks ago. Very close second to Kaji. I would say Miku is equivalent to Nobu. The guy from the Globe and Mail - Chris Smith panned Miku recently, but based on Toronto Life (and the fact that Chris Smith seems to think that Edulis is the be all to end all and I thought it was OK at best, and would not make a point of going back) I decided to try Miku. IMHO, it was indeed excellent. Everything I had there was great and I will make a point of going back (soon).

Other amazing place is Yasu. Very small intimate restaurant on Harbourd and Spadina. You need to make a reservation at least 2 or 3 weeks out. Only 10 places at the bar, and one table for 2 in the entire place. You pick nothing. Just sit your ass down at the bar and the chef will feed you one piece of nigiri at a time.

Thanks for the suggestions. If Miku is anything like Nobu, its a must try. I'm still savouring my last Nobu jalapeno yellowtail and black cod miso experience .. yum

Sadly for the price... you are left still hungry for food after. I have been there twice with clients and second was the last time.
I can't see this place lasting long due to the location south of Front Street and away from the Financial District core.

Go to:
1. Sushi Kaji - http://www.sushikaji.com/ Best in town, but $$$$$ and not downtown
2. Yasu - http://yasu-sushibar.com/index.html
3. Yuzunohana - http://yuzunohana.ca/
4. Janpango- http://japango.net/
5. Ja Bistro - http://www.jabistro.com/

Four of us at Miko ate very well for $450 which included a bottle of wine at 70, not including tip.

Food was fantastic. Very unique.

Kaji would have run 700 to 800.00, not including tip for 4 people as it's 150 a head. Kaji is still the king, no doubt about that, but Miko is nothing to scoff at.

As to the location, I might have agreed with you 10 years ago, but not now. There is a whole thing happening around the ACC, Bremner Blvd. the new Delta, Real Sports, etc.

Extra vote for Kaji. I've done high end sushi in Vancouver, Tokyo and Kyoto.. Kaji is the place to go.
And another vote for Kaji.

For something downtown, I recommend Sushi Bar Sushiya. Small place downstairs at 193 Carlton St. just west of Parliament. Excellent food with a nice selection of different sakis. Reasonable prices. We are often the only round eyes in the place.

We'll split the Uni and Ikura Don as our desert. Vinegar rice topped with sea urchin and salmon roe. $19 Yum!

i find I prefer to have sushi room temperature or slightly warm as opposed to ice cold, so after trying most of the different offerings, the blowtorched sushi was my favourite as it was different and a nice change from ice cold sushi rolls or sashimi dunked in the same old soy sauce at most places.
Proper sushi should have the rice around body temperature actually and the fish near a cool room temperature - so you're on the right track. The classic preparation and presentation also has a small amount of wasabi under the protein and a light brushing of soy sauce on the top, no dipping or dunking required, straight into your mouth!

Jiro Dreams of Sushi was the highest rated movie of 2012. Even for those not into sushi, this film is about dedicating one's life striving for perfection.

PS. another vote for Kaji, JaBistro, Japango, Zen, yada yada.

Why is nobody mention all you can eat sushi places haha.
paper thin cut fish with fistfuls of mushed over cooked rice to fillup fatties faster.
Wonder why? LOL :)

Tho I must admit, Sushi Inn in yorkville is my guilty pleasure. Reasonable price for the quality.
After spending $250 on an SP, sometimes ya gotta eat down scale :p

Agree. When I lived in the area I'd get take-out from Sushi Inn once per week. Good value.
