This was discussed in another thread but here's some additional info.

Surprisingly, Verbatim is ranked as a quality DVD on the following website - although only those made in certain countries (i.e., not China!). Verbatim got slammed as being crap in the other thread.

Of course, all the Boxing Day blank DVDs I bought last year are made in China! But at least now I know what to look for.

Anyone know a good place to purchase them? I want to do it in person so I can check the label to see where it's made.

I know Future Shop carries Verbatim, but I don't know where they are made.

Taiyo Yuden are the best imho...

The problem is unless you scan them you don't who really made them, example I bought some tdk from costco some time ago they were all white on top and they were original tdk's good quality.

But then I bought another spindle again from costco they were also tdk, they were grey on top and after scanning them they were made by Ritek and they played on a computer but they didn't play in diffrent dvd players. Not happy with them.

Taiyo Yuden has always been rated best followed by Sony and Verbatim.
All other brands were knocked as inferior.
Surprised Sony has been dropped to a medium ranking!
In the past many reported Sony was essentially Taiyo Yuden with very slight flaws.

The TDK I last got from Costco were CMC Magnetics.

As for erbatim, any one can make them, and the last ones I bought were CMC Magnetics.

The last place I would ever buy media is from FS and BB.

As for success with burning DVDs, you really have to consider the machine, and the software used on that machine. A lot of coasters with CMC media on LG burners, where the same brand of disc burned with a Liteon burner were perfect.

Bottom line; there are many more variables than just where you buy your media and what brand is on the lable.

Anywhere there's a Strip Joint
I've never had a problem burning, even with the cheap 50 for $7.99 discs.

It's not with the burning, it's with how long the burning lasts. Give it a couple years and 50% of those burns could be worthless paperweights...

Canada Computers sells Verbatim from Japan at one time. ALso they sold Taiyo Yuden which is great. Believe it or not there is a way to tell where they are made, for ie a few years back my friend told me by SOny with White foam from Walmart made in Japan not the grey sponge, made in China.
So yes I buy in person my CD/DVD blanks.

Taiyo Yuden is all I will use for DVDs. They are the best to burn and last the longest.
Black's claim their DVD's will last 300 years. Just bring in your memory card/CD/DVD and they will burn it on to their 300 year DVD.

LOL!
Do you really think DVD media will still be around in 50 years let alone 300 years?

Even if they are around, where does one find a machine to play them? Ever try to find a VCR nowadays for those who have VHS tapes? BTW Heard that the old vinyl records are making a comeback and with it the turntable (what is a turntable?).

I heard that too, and I gave my Dual with magnetic cartridge Made in Germany away. I alway heard that vinly had better sound than cd's. I am sorry, I have normal ears that have been blasted in the 60's and 70's, the one thing I don't miss is the scratches and the hiss. If one had a real great turntable and no scratches, maybe, but I drink beer. Experts do say and orginal vinyl is the best, but I drink beer.

i've used all types of brands of dvd-r or dvd+r, and i find that no name's work the best.
as for how long they will last, is how you store them.
i have dvdr's from as far back as 2003-2004 and they work just fine.

so, its really just a matter of preference and brand name.
