swallows another one as they buy CITY TV/CHUM limited for 1.7 Billion.

I guess this is another proof of media getting bigger and out of control. Less media competition means more mind control by fewer people.

CHUM is going to lay off hundreds across Canada. Rumour has around 300 people from various stations across Canada have been fired.

That was my point in posting the thread, and I'm glad you see the potential harm from a takeover. Less media control is better for programming, as it promotes more individuality, as well as more diverse programming.

I would say watch for the Rogers Empire to expand again as well. They would be the likely candidate to pickup the throw away stations, like they did with Sportsnet

There will probably be a request for the local channels all be sold off like they did when SunTV/Toronto1 and Craig was acquired.

For those that get access to chum via A-Channel stations locally (like Victora/Barrie etc) I wouldn't be surprised if BGM drops the channels entirely.

Sorry but Chum.City is really the only broadcaster that actually seems to make an attempt to make decent Canadian programming. If BGM gets it then say bye to anything decent coming out of them.

Sounds like CRTC is going to allow it. One of the requirement, BGM will not interfere with Chum programming, just like the CTV deal.

Rogers & foreign Internet companies likely muscle Canadian market.

This'll let BGM get a leg up, before the U.S. big boys move in. This will help Bell family offering media over Internet & cellphone.

I guess they will have to sell off several TV and radio stations in the competing markets...
I don't understand this. Why would BGM be buying a bunch of TV stations they won't be allowed to own?

Are these TV stations still required to broadcast their signal on VHF or UHF? WTF is the point of that in 2006? I'll bet most of the young-uns on this board don't know what I'm talking about because they aren't old enough to remember anything except cable and satellite TV service.

It isn't profitable to have more than one station in the same market, so something has to go. CP24 and CTV newsnet both offer the same thing. CITY TV, and CTV both have 6pm newscast in Toronto, Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton and Winnipeg so one will have to go. "A Channel" from Barrie has an overlap in Toronto, while CFTO has a repeater tower near Port Severn near Georgian Bay right in the heart of VRLand. "A Channel" is in London, Ottawa, Victoria and Windsor, and I'm sure CTV has a broadcasts in those areas as well. It was stated that they may get rid of 6pm news on a few stations, and that is maddening, because it gives you another viewpoint on political issues.

CTV already had Sportsnet when TSN was acquired, and Sportsnet was sold because they couldn't keep both.

Alyssa Babe's question is what will happen with MTV or Much Music?

They can't have their cake and eat it too. Something is going to suffer. 22 people are already gone from the Barrie TV station.

CFTO is UHF 21 near Georgian Bay. CHTV Hamilton is UHF 67 near Georgian Bay. CBC has UHF 16 as a repeater in the area
