In the past few months I'd spent a few hours of phone calls with Bell and Rogers.
You gotta bluff them a bit. I got all the online info I could find on each and then called one of them, Bell, and asked what was the best they could do for me to gain a new customer. They put together a package. Then I said to the guy, are you sure that's the best you can do, because I'm going to Rogers now to see if they have something comparable or better. I got all the usual tech bullshit about how Bell fibre is better that cable, etc, etc and then when I continued to tell him I was going to rogers to compare he finally gave me a free installation deal. When he was final about his deal, I had it all written down and asked him to save the deal on his system and I would get back to him. he tried to get me to agree right away, but I refused.
Then I went to Rogers and did the same thing. They came up with a very similar package to Bell finally, about $10 per month cheaper.
I suppose I could have gone back to Bell and got that $10.00 or perhaps more, but by that time I was tired of the game.
The first deal Rogers gave me was reduced rate for three months. When I was approaching the 2 month mark, i called into rogers and using the voicemail prompt directed my call to the option to "cancel my service". I got my three month discount extended to two years, and a further discount off my home phone bill. They obviously did not want to lose and existing customer.
Its a pain in the butt, but I hate monthly bills and so I fight to get them down as low as possible.
But them, I'm semi retired, so I can take the time to do that.
At all times I spoke in a friendly polite manner, firm and direct.
