If anybody’s been watching the forest fires in Kelowna, you’ll know what I’m talking about. 5 years ago my mother built her retirement home on the mountain over looking Kelowna.

Last night she called about me 12:30 (9:30 BC time) in a panic to inform me that the RCMP were at her door advising that the neibourhood was being evacuated due to the rapidly spreading forest fires. I spoke with her today by cell phone after watching the news, reports are saying that in her area approximately 200 homes were destroyed overnight.

The local authorities say she won’t be allowed back into the area until first of the week at the earliest. I’m crossing my fingers for her. Things don’t look very promising for mother Deal.

Man Mother Nature can really dish it out can’t she?

It's quite tragic as Kelowna is a very picturesque town. The photo on the Saturday Globe & Mail was a shocking site. What really pisses me off though is that the Alberta fire was probably started by a cigarette butt.

Note to smokers - If you want smoke out in the woods in summertime, go right ahead. But put your damn smokes OUT when you're done! How utterly stupid can some people be?

TRD - I hoe your mom is doing ok...I have several relatives that live in BC. Several of them that are near or in the fire zones.

As for most of the fires in BC this year, the experts have said that most of them have been started by natural means, lightning and spontaneous combustion.

How about that photo on today's Globe & Mail? I find that so totally wierd how one house can be burnt to the ground while the one next door has only superficial damage.

At least no one has died and it's only material damage. Still, you gotta feel badly for those folks out there.

Hope for the best...

TRD... Hope for your Mom's sake the fire will not destroy or damage her home and she is in a safe place. I saw some of those TV reports and the destroyed homes. Really felt sorry for those people that lost all. Can't imagine how that feels coming home to see your house and all belongings are gone. Let's all hope for the best for everyone out there.

Two of my employees in Kelowna had their house burn to the ground, while houses in between them stayed standing. Not only can she dish it out, but Mother Nature is a fickle bitch.
