The most recent Triple Crown winners for pitching are Clayton Kershaw and Justin Verlander, who won for the NL and AL respectively in 2011 (the first season since 1924 to see Triple Crown winners in both leagues).

When Yaz hit for the Triple Crown in 1967, he was the only .300 hitter in the American League at .301. That was in the era of the eighteen inch mound, which may have contributed to the phenomenal records of such pitchers as Denny McLain, Bob Gibson, Sandy Koufax, Don Drysdale, Juan Marichal, et al.

I still remember the American League race went to the last day in 1967. Boston won and Detroit lost. Boston went on to lose to Bob Gibson, (who had three starts each in both the 1967 and 1968 World Series) and the Cardinals.

Also, for Harry Doyle fans, Bob Uecker set records for most errors and most passed balls for a catcher in 1967. Not bad for a third-string catcher.

I think he batted .326 but I think Pete Runnels (check name) did win a batting title with a .301 average. P.S. Yaz did win a batting title in 1968 (the year AFTER the triple crown) with a .301 average. Runnels did win 2 batting titles but with slightly higher averages than .301.

Rock,

I stand corrected. It was 1968, when the Tigers won and Yaz hit .301. He was the only .300 hitter that year. The next year, MLB lowered the mounds and the averages shot up.

Congrats to Miguel Cabrera, first Triple Crown in 45 years. Wonder if he or Mike Trout will win MVP?

I do not think this would have happened if Jose Bautista was healthy. I think he would have won the home run title again.

I don't even get how this is a debate.

Tigers are going to the postseason, Angels are not, Cabrera did something that hasn't been done in 45 years, Trout should just get Rookie of the Year.

I agree, but apparently some people are using advanced metrics and physical gifts (Trout's speed and stolen bases) to make a case. While defense and position played should be taken to into account to a degree, how do those people explain known 'defensive pedestrians' like Barry Bonds (as a Giant), Jeff Kent, Ryan Howard, Jason Giambi, and Frank Thomas? Sure most are firstbasemen, but why should a player be given elevated consideration because he was born fast. That theory would give Rickey Henderson a few more MVPs.

How rare is a triple crown? Since 1878 only 17 men (no women) have accomplished that feat. Almost every winner is in the HOF. The great Ted Williams and Rogers Hornsby are the only two time winners.

I hope that Cabrera appreciates that the triple crown is a team accomplishment as well as an individual one. He had the good fortune of being on a good team. Lead-off man Austin Jackson had a OBP of .377, allowing Cabrera to hit often with men on base. Fielder batting behind Cabrera made it unlikely that other teams would pitch around him. However, Cabrera certainly took full advantage of the opportunity that he was given.

Ryan Braun could be a future triple crown winner, unless he is disqualified. Maybe Pujol but he is getting older. Prince Fielder?

Next year not only will the Tigers have Fielder and Cabrera , but Victor Martinez will be back, if he regains form, depending on who bats behind whom, I can see the tigers having another triple crown winner.
