A bit of a runaway in the NL with Albert Pujols and in the AL IMO it should be clearcut Joe Mauer, but I'm not sure if that will be the way the vote plays out in the AL.

Thoughts on whether someone other then Mauer should get it.

I will post my ballot based on 14-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1 basis (I.e each voter gives a top 10) that is used by the real voters.

Good, we can have discussion.

To me Mauer is one of if not the best MVP candidate in this entire generation. He outduels his competition far more this year then Pujols, from my persepctive

He plays at a prime defensive position, and is a gold glover at that position.

He leads the leauge in OPS by a very large margin of .082 as of yesterday. The last time an AL player led the league by that much was Jason Giambi in 2001.

So he is the best defensive player at a one of three most importnat defensive positions, and is the best offensive player by a fair margin.

Not sure how he can't get it.

I do certainly like Miguel Cabrera and Mark Teixiera in my top five... perhaps 2 and 3.

I would go for Teixera - much as I hate the Yanks. The NYY have the best record in the AL and Tex is their premier producer. Mauer cannot - by the nature of his position - play as frequently as a guy at 1 of the other fielding positions and it is doubtful that Twins will make the post season.

IIRC, the best offensive producer on the Twins is Morneau anyway.

How many votes do you think Hill will get? Without him and Lind, the Jays play .300 ball this year.

Here
AL MVP
1. Mauer (leads the league in BA, OBP, SLG, OPS, but he will only win if the Twins make the playoffs)
2. Teixeira (more traditional favorite, among the leaders in HR, RBI and his team will have 100+ wins)
3. Cabrera (DET)
4. Morales (LAA)
5. Youkalis (BOS)
5. Jeter (NYY)
5. Greinke (KC)

NL MVP
1. Pujola (potential Triple Crown winner and the Cards make the playoffs)
2. H. Ramirez (FLA)
3. Fielder (MIL)
4. Kemp (LAD)
5. Utley (PHI)

AL Cy Young
1. Greinke (among the lowest run support in the league, lost a ridiculous number of games when he gave up 1-2 runs)
2. Hernandez (SEA)
3. Sabathia (NYY)
4. Halladay (TOR)
5. Beckett (BOS)

NL Cy Young
1. Lincecum (SF)
2. Carpenter (STL)
3. Cain (SF)
4. Wainright (STL)
5. Haren (ARIZ)

Pujols, no doubt!
The guy can sure fill up the stat sheet and also get you 10-15 steals a year!

How about Jason Bay of the Red Sox? Sure, the average is not there but still a very productive season for Boston.

Pujols is a lock in the NL. He's as close as we are ever going to see to Lou Gehrig at first base.

In the AL the most valuable players to their teams are; Mauer, Jeter and Ichiro.

Joe Mauer has just clinched the AL MVP. He was always the AL MVP in my mind, but hammer raised a valid point that the voters may see it differently. A moment ago, if he was not already in the lead, he gained a few more votes.

0-0 bottom of the sixth, two outs, runner on third, Joe Mauer battles back from an 0-2 count to get a hit OFF ZACH GREINKE to give the Twins the 1-0 lead.

The real question is MLB's Best Player- Pujols or Mauer.

Alex Rios

Kenny Williams for taking Alex Rios? Actually, that would be Blue Jays executive of the year.

On a serious note, the fact that Tex, Jeter, and maybe Cabrera will make the play-offs doesn't really work in baseball. While, if close, team record will sway the voters, but we're talking the same sport that selected Andre Dawson and Alex Rodriguez when their teams finished dead last. Taking that into consideration I think Tex will (but shouldn't) edge Mauer if the Twins don't tie for the Central tomorrow night, but reversed (Mauer squeaking out the trophy) if the Twins tie on Sunday.

NL MVP - Pujols (no brainer)
AL MVP - Mauer (he missed the first month and look at his #'s)
NL Cy Young - Carpenter (Lincecum got hurt otherwise I'd say him)
AL Cy Young - Greinke (his ERA and WHIP is ridiculous and more than a K per inning)
