Is this legal? I imagine that many people will be concerned about the smoke, and some may think it's a fire. But I haven't enjoyed a good barbecue in a loong time because of no backyard. Anyone have experience with having a bbq on the balcony?

In one condo building that I know, barbeques are legal if they're supplied by natural gas. Propane tanks are illegal.

Legal or not................don't do it. Years ago I was driving along a a small seconary street. There were people pointing to a third floor balcony where a BBQ fire was just starting to go out of control. The balcony awning was catching fire. As I was in my car I had to drive around the block to get a second look. In the time it to me to come around the smoke was already coming out of the front window of the third floor dwelling. The place was a write off after the fire.

Believe in Hamilton there is a bylaw prohibiting it, but not positive. I do know that the 3 different apartment buildings I lived in over the last 20 years absolutely prohibited BBQs on the balconies.

My last condo didn't allow BBQing on the balcony.. But they did offer a communal BBQ that we could use.... One of the many reasons why I moved out of a condo and into a house... Too many rules, and I don't like rules... :)

It'd be cool to have you post a video in which you yourself were the star.

made it possiblet o have an eletronic grill/bbq on your apartment or condo balcony. I am considering getting one for myself cause yyou can bring it indoors as well.
Nice, but you'd want to check with your apt/condo rules to make sure it's allowed. I'm betting it'd still fall under the "no BBQ" rules.

I miss my backyard bbq, but now that I'm in a condo with a balcony, I wouldn't use it to bbq. My rights extend to where they bump against someone else's. Why should my neighbours above me have to put up with the smoke and smell and those below have to put up with ash, bits of charcoal and the like?

Most condos have rules against it, and they're right to.

One thing that many does not know is that your balcony is actually not yours.
Depending on the condo rules, some of the new ones now allow for BBQ. Potentially a huge fire hazard and also obviously this is factored into the building insurance premium

Our condo has traditionally had a "no complaints no see" approach. But this year they have come out and said that absolutely no BBQ's are allowed.

Open flames (ie traditional BBQ) are not allowed on any common element (ie balcony) and the transport of propane on elevators is illegal without special precautions (never listed). Apparently more new residents are complaining about the "odour" produced by the BBQs. I guess it is ok to cook salt cod or curry indoors, but not BBQ a steak on the balcony.

Our condo does have a number of BBQs on the property for anyone to use, but for a single guy is really is just too much hassle to fill a cooler with charcoal and lighter fluid, the one steak, the rest of dinner, plates etc and still not be allowed to have a beer (no liquor on the common elements rule). And if I have to take a leak, it is not a quick run in and run out.

I have been BBQ'ing on a balcony for over 10 years.
No problems whatsoever. I think the problem is that
idiots get Boozed up before Grillin, and then leave the
Propane on or to much smoke drifts over to other Apt units.
I have been fortunate and lived on the end of the Building
where the smoke does'nt carry to other units on the 12th floor.

Between a rock and a hard place
I've served on a condo board of directors. It is illegal to carry propane into a residential highrise. It is illegal to light charcoal or other flammable substances within 9 meters of a neighbours window or doorway. It is very likely that the balcony doorways and windows between you and your neighbours are less than 9 meters apart.

Bottom line. Illegal.

But that hasn't stopped me from doing it.
