Hi Gents,

I am in the early planning stages of a trip to Bali in January 2005, and was wondering if anyone had any advice?

I am going alone to recharge after a stressful 18 months, and am hoping to meet people there, hopefully a guide and whatever else for exploration, scuba, partying and good old fashioned fun!

Any input is appreciated...

Bali

Balib is great choice for R&R. Lots of choice for beach and sightseeing. I have some down time, so considering same for myself. www.frommers.com and www.fodors.com are good sources.

I find Kuta to be filled with over-priced hotels and commericalized. Try to get out of the hotel strip, locals are ver laid back and friendly. Except for past bombing, Bali is very safe, in terms of crime. Lots of driver-for-hire at the hotels. Daily rates are reasonable.

My preference is to explore the island on my own, it's a small island, easy to drive around. If you can drive manual, get a jeep to track the quieter beaches and remote spots. Canadian driver license will do.

Most Bali tourists are Aussie or European, with few Americans. It's a split between the laid-back sight-seeing tourists and the party crowd. Better parties at the bars in town but few big name hotel do draw the good looking crowds.

Lots of great diving, para-sailing, sea-doo, surf, etc.

Their spas and 5 star hotels are among best in world, see www.conceige.com

Their food are amazing. Food to try: Satay, Mie Goreng, Gado gado... Food stalls with busy tourists are best bet for $ bargains and taste. Lots of fresh fruits.

In terms of local girls, I find most are average looking by my asian standard. Ones that are pretty, are really attractive. Lots of hot foreign blondes thou. For local girls, better choices in Phuket, Thailand, its similiar to Bali for R&R but less prestige.

Enjoy...

I spent a month in Bali last October and recommmend it highly. There is lots to do and it is not very crowded due to the bombing.

As far as the girls are concerned-the best place for info, as aways, is www.wsgforum.com. The pro scene is a bit brutal, in my opinion. Your best bet is to find a semi-pro girlfriend for the length of your stay there. They can be quite sweet and great tour guides.

Have fun

I would personally stay away from Kuta. It is super commercialized and trashy. Spend some time in Lovina... a laid back little beach town as well as Ubud for a litle culture. Sengiggi is pretty cool and has fewer tourists. But if all you want to do is party Kuts is fine, but its really no different than going to the CAribbean.
