I think we need more Connie Chung, Norman Mineta, Elaine Chao, Lucy Liu, Chow Yun Fat, Jackie Chan, Russell Wong, etc. Heck, even part-Asians like Keanu Reeves and Tiger Woods. I don't think we don't need an Asian 50-cent. It just doesn't work for us, and we need to be ourselves.

An Italian, an Irishman and a Japanese fellow are hired at a construction site. The foreman points out a huge pile of sand and says to the Italian guy, "You're in charge of sweeping," to the Irishman, "You're in charge of shoveling, and to the Japanese guy, "And you're in charge of the supplies.

"Now, I have to leave for a little while. I expect you guys to make a dent in that pile."

So the foreman goes away for a couple hours, and when he returns, the pile of sand is untouched. He says to the Italian, "Why didn't you sweep any of it?" The Italian replies, "I didn't have a broom. You said the Japanese guy was in charge of the supplies, but he disappeared and I couldn't find him."

So then the foreman turn to the Irishman and asks why he didn't shovel. The Irishman replies, "I couldn't get myself a shovel. You left the Japanese guy in charge of the supplies, but I couldn't find him."

The foreman is really ticked off now, and storms off toward the pile of sand looking for the Japanese guy.

Just then, the Japanese guy springs out from a closet and yells:

It's just another form of music. You don't need to be black to rap.
How come it doesn't work? Because you don't appreciate music? So when Sam Hui was wrong when he was putting in Chinese lyrics to Elvis Presley's songs back in the 70's? What's ourselves? So instead of doing anything creative, we should make a Xerox copy of rap music. The African-Americans created it from scratch and perfected it to the point where it held mass appeal to all races. I don't know where the white people learning Mandarin came from, but how often does that happen vs. white people buying rap music? We should find some way of doing the same with Asian instruments and style, updating them for modern mass appeal (and reaching similar popularity as rap). How many non-Asians listen to Asian music vs. non-blacks listen to rap?

Oh please, if asians want to rap I say go for it. Hip hop is about the lyrics, the dj and the producer. Last I checked you don't have to be a certain ethnicity to excel at these.

Jin was a mc that gained some publicity winning some battles on 106 and park.

DJ Qbert is asain (I think he looks like he is could be wrong) and one of the sickest turntablists around.

Anyways, maybe ACDC should stick to their scottish roots and have bagpipe solos in more than just one song (it's a long way to the top).

And maybe whites should quit the whole rock thing and go back to classical music and give it back to the blacks.

Heck there's even a Jew that does reggae.

I think we've moved beyond the idea that music can only be performed by those of the same race as where it originated.

Of course when something is done badly it seems derivative but that doesn't mean people should stop trying because some people have failed.

No, I never said that. Just leave them to explore. Different people have different preference. If rap music is the beginning of one's appreciation to music. Let it be.

Whether there are too many Asian fifty or too little non Asians appreciating Chinese music, it's their choice. Music has no boundaries.
