Mt. Kilauea is a basalt volcano, it doesn't explode like Mt. St Helens an incendiary volcano. It opens fissures, the current eruption is one of the largest in over 60 years. The Big Island is in full land forming again.

Has the Nillsbury Doughboy irritated a Supervolcano with his nuclear testing. He's shittin bricks, he has no defense. Mt. Piektu is a Bad Motherfucker! Mother Nature always wins.
Here's the footage from last week of a car being engulfed in lava. The story behind this is, the homeowner bought and sold used cars, and the mustang didn't have a battery, so was a lower priority as he and friends drove the other cars to safety. By the time he got around to the Mustang, it was too dangerous to try to move.
The neighbourhood most affected is Leilani Estates. Sadly, a lot of the homeowners came to this relatively new housing development because they were priced out of other parts of Hawaii. So it's very much a working-class neighbourhood and many did not (or could not afford) lava insurance.
