Hey Folks!

This snow made me think about getting an automatic car starter installed. Anybody have any suggestions as to what I should be looking for? I'm planning on heading off to the Future Shop and seeing what they have to offer, as I know they do installations as well. What kind of price ranges are they available in? Got to save some bucks for the hobby you know!

Thanks

An automatic car starter is the best thing in the world, I would not get rid of mine for anything. I got mine at a high-end stereo store, and paid about $250. They have to do a fair amount of work on the electrical system of your car, so you may not want a $10 per hour kid from Future Shop doing the work. There are also skill issues, a bad installer may demand your extra key to imbed, or accidently disable your security.

I was informed by the Honda dealership where I purchased my car a few months ago that the installation of an automatic car starter would void my warranty as they have had issues with these devices leading to problems ranging from electrical issues to outright fires.. to be honest I'm not surprised.. my old accord went thru a whole series of electrical issues sometime after having a car starter installed.. at a reputable high end stereo store in missisauga... can't trace the car starter directly to the problems but i'm certain the issues started shortly after installation..

might want to check this out in case your vehicle is still under warranty...

my dealer told me that too, but said that if I go through them it will not void the warranty, but it was $500. that is just a bit too pricy for me.

Van and Truck World did mine. 250-300 as I recall. No problems, except I had to replace the key they used to imbed. $35 dollars for a new key and I needed both originals to program the new one. I had to dig under the dash to retrieve the key. Luckily they didn't break it to make it unusable, as some installers do.

Dealer's are bullshit artists. THey contract out the installation.

Stay away from Future Crap and go to a garage that has licensed mechanics and have them install it. It wont void your warranty according to the starter manufacturer.
Sheik is 100% right guys. My installer who has done allot of work for me. He has contracts with a Chrysler dealership and Canadian Tire to do remote car starter/alarms systems in car. They do charge more money to do this. If it is a reputable installer that has been in business for years. I would go to them. Do your research first.

Clifford, Viper, are all made by a company called DEI. Those are some of the best remote starter/car alarms combo

Some of the newer cars you have to have and extra key to do it. Some of the keys have a microchip in it to tell the ignition to turn over..

Also some installers would not touch a Standard Transmisson car . It is too dangerous to do them and they can be in court for years if something goes bad. It can be done but you have to leave you're car in netural to allow it to start.

Anyone know where I can get a KITT installed in my car?

"Knight Industries develops KITT (Knight Industries Two Thousand), a super powered and intelligent souped-up Pontiac Trans-Am. KITT can drive 300 miles an hour, is bullet and fire-proof and can talk and helps Michael fight injustices in the world."

A remote starter should NOT void a warranty. Just make sure you get one with an auto shut off. The reason dealers might be a little more $$ is that they usually have a good quality unit installed. a $200 unit is worth just that.

BTW, not ALL dealers are BS artists!!!!!!!!!

Kat, depends on the car & type of starter. You should only need 1 key. But it's alway wise to have an extra key. Some need programming, and are very expensive to replace!

Check for a bigger knob....

You only need the extra key if it has a microchip in it. It's an anti theft device some newer cars have. The installer uses it to trick the car into thinking that the key is inserted when you push the remote start button on the key fob you will get with the starter. You will then need your key when you get into the car to unlock the steering wheel and drive away. If the car is not turned on with the key in 15 minutes the car will stop running (if started remotely).

You can usually recognize a microchip key by the bigger than usual "knob" on the end. Our consult your owner's manual or the dealer. Or ask the installer.

Cheers,
Jack.
