Authorities arrest 26 illegal immigrants at Northrop Grumman

PASCAGOULA, Miss. - Federal authorities have arrested 26 illegal immigrants working for a subcontractor at Northrop Grumman Ship Systems.
The 26 undocumented workers were arrested Wednesday in a sweep conducted by agents from the Department of Homeland Security, the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service and Naval Criminal Investigative Service.
Agents searched the Pascagoula facility for suspected undocumented workers identified through Northrop Grumman records.
The 26 illegal workers had access to or attempted to access the shipyard, authorities said.
None of the people arrested were Northrop Grumman employees and the company cooperated with the government sting, said Michael Holt, special agent-in-charge of the Department of Homeland Security in New Orleans.
The 26 workers, whose names have not been released, face federal prosecution for using fraudulent documents to gain employment, falsely claiming to be U.S. citizens or illegal re-entry to the United States after deportation.
The identity of the subcontractor hasn't been revealed.
Northrop Grumman has procedures to verify the citizenship or immigration status of individuals seeking work at its facilities, the company said in a prepared statement.
"The sophisticated level of document forgery, however, necessitates the assistance of organizations such as INS to make the final determination on questionable cases," the company's statement said.
