Australian police warn Apple maps 'could kill': Users looking for city directed to barren outback more than 40 miles away

*Users searching for the city of Mildura found themselves directed to the middle of the Murray-Sunset National Park

*They ended up in an area with no nearby water supplies and no mobile network where temperatures can reach 46C

*Some motorists were stranded for up to 24 hours and were forced to walk long distances before they were able to call for help

yep not a good idea using a half baked app......thankfully no one has died yet!

So, as pointed out in the first thread on this story in the Lounge, has this also ever happened with other GPS? Just to help you out, yes. The only reason you are bringing this to our attention is that it a story about an apple product. Where was your concern when that young lady in New Brunswick almost died a couple of years ago, when she got lost using her GPS, well before Apple got into the market?

It was all over the news and well discussed in the lounge along with a few other incidents out west. The bottom line was don't put your trust blindly in GPS. Your post was clearly based on it being an apple product, little else.

If we are repeating ourselves - the Apple Maps app is consistently sending people the wrong way - it's not an isolated incidence. It is not the iPhone - it is the app and users can still load Google Maps and be just as accurate as any other smartphone.

Yup.

From The Register - http://www.theregister.co.uk/2012/12/10/apple_maps_ghost_mildura/

In this case, the Australian Gazetteer – the authoritative list of 300,000-plus placenames, complete with coordinates – includes two Milduras. One is the “real” town, the other is an entry for “Mildura Rural City”, coordinates -34.79724 141.76108. It’s this second entry that points to the middle of the Murray-Sunset National Park, just near a spot called Rocket Lake.

I can’t even blame the custodian of the Gazetteer, Geosciences Australia, for the error, since the data comes from the state of Victoria and the status is given as “authorised”. Until someone – pity them – is moved to sift through the history of inputs to the Gazetteer, we won’t know.
