References are often asked by providers as a verification method. I personally do give this option but I often find myself reaching out to providers who have no clue their name was mention or just I receive an answer days later. I thought I could help you guys navigate references and also preserve your relationship with the provider you asked to.

1. Make sure the provider give references.

Some providers won't give them as they don't ask for them. Some providers won't give them if you only met once. You will generally find this informations on their website or directly by asking them.

2. Ask the provider BEFORE giving their name and do not assume it's a yes.

Once you are sure she provides references, ask them politely and reassure them that you plan on seeing them again.
Ask when and how they would like to be reached at, and wait for their answer before giving their names.

3. A little something

It's not necessary, but the provider is about to take her time for you to dip your eggplant into another avocado so a little gift card or a little tip, will make sure that you can always come back to your previous avocado without hitting a seed.
You can also book your next appointment with her. It will reassure her.

4. Never use the same provider more than 2-3 times.

By consideration for her time and your relationship. If you do, because she is your only avocado, make sure you book her often. Otherwise even if it's not jealousy, it can become annoying for her.

Overall, you should treat references with a provider the same way you deal with a references for a job. Be polite. Be considerate.

Happy hobbying!

N.B : Providers feel free to chime in.
