I'm not cuz i'm jewish and it's considered a desecration to the body to remove parts so you can't have a jewish burial. I'd like to be an organ donor though. Mind you, my organs are pretty well shot now so no one would want them anyway. But it's a good idea and i do support it.

I signed up as an organ donor when I renewed my Health Card.

Good decision?
Yes. It's not like you can "take it with you". Might as well do something positive and help make a difference in someone's life.

I'm a firm believer in the 'negative option' idea; you only sign the card if you don't want to donate. From what I've heard there are a lot of people who simply don't get around to signing it, this would eliminate that problem.

As well -you should have some sort of a living will. Even if you sign the card, a family member or next of kin can cockblock the process. At the very least let them know so, God forbid; should anything happens that makes the organs viable, nobody can block the process.

If I'm done with them, take what you need. I also think negative option wouldn't be too bad a thing

I'm willing to donate any organ or tissue for transplant and/or medical research and wish that the families of people who've made this choice wouldn't be given the opportunity to override the decision (not that my family would) The organs and tissues that won't be harvested will be little more than maggot food and I prefer not to let things go to waste. If my organs and tissues can't be used for transplant or research they can harvest whatever they want in order to put them on display in the Science Centre or given to the Dutch guy who makes art out of plastinated corpses and body parts (Bodyworlds, see the exhibit if you get the chance http://www.bodyworlds.com/en.html)

If you needed a transplant to live would you accept it?

Excellent question, you win 5 internets! Someone like Petzel should be given a choice in that situation (assuming he doesn't have the courage of his convictions); if you accept the organ you must agree to be an organ donor yourself, and must never relinquish that. Otherwise, NO ORGAN FOR YOU! Come back, ONE YEAR![/soupnazivoice] If he does have the courage of his convictions then my hat is off to him.

This is currently the case when you renew an Ontario Health Card. If you don't want to be an organ donor, you indicate that before they make the card. Donor status is indicated on the back of the card. I didn't sign up to be a donor, but by not opting out, I became one.
