Are you a teacher? Is teaching students today extra challenging?

I spoke to several teacher friends and they all tell me that attitudes toward school have changed since the internet and smartphones.

One friend has been videotaped during class and reported to the principal for not staying on topic. Students can post poor reviews on teacher review sites or bully on social media. Phones are constantly ringing during class. And students complain that attending school is useless since they can find the answer to any question using google.

Has this been your experience?

The students are missing the entire point of school: learning how to think in a critical manner.
Sure you can google for an answer but how accurate or truthful is the result?

It should be interesting to see which members on this board are teachers, especially those who have fetishes.

I'm guessing that teaching in general has become more challenging. I'm not a teacher, but like most, my kids have had great teachers who were able to relate to the kids and found a way to make learning more interesting as well as teachers who taught directly out of the text book and lost half their audience in class.

What i did notice a big change in was the parents. When I went to school, if I was doing poorly in a class or was disruptive and the school called home my dad would kick my ass and immediately sided with the teacher and the school. These days parents automatically blame the teacher for everything.

Not sure where the fault lies these days but I'm guessing somewhere in between.

I feel like the "hockey parent" is becoming more prevalent

Teaching is still financially lucrative, job guarantee, great benefits, indexed pension, only work 5 hours a day and 10 months a year and retire at 55.

(No, I'm not a teacher but know several.)

In a place far, far away
Why should teachers give a flying puck? If students want to learn they should just shut the fuck up. Teachers won't get a bonus if more students pass. They are paid the same.

Not a teacher. But I coach at various ages.

Kids AND parents are absolutely different. Specially in sports it's the instant gratification generation. I'm running into more and more boys and girls who don't have to wait or work hard for much. And when work is introduced many can't handle it.

Sports are less about achievement and more about paying for the entertainment. Oh the conversations I have about why someone can't play a certain position.

And then the internet drama and bullying is real. <this is the parents fault tho. It's usually here take this phone and shut up.

Bah.

But the world isn't falling apart. It's just changing. Every generation has the big annoying change.

Imagine how pissed you'd be back in the day when the gov said your kids had to go to school.

Many peoples first thought would be ..."I need that kid to work the fields to bring in the crops... to hell with those books"

So much miss-information ......

financially lucrative <-- 70% true. To maximize their income, teachers need multiple teachables or a master's degree or need additional credentials (i.e. French, ESL, special needs).
job guarantee <-- Not true. Many Golden Horseshoe boards have been laying teachers off for years due to declining enrolment.
great benefits <-- Misleading, teachers pay extra for the better features in their benefits
indexed pension <-- Misleading, the teacher's pension is completely self funded and administered
work 5 hours <-- Bullshit. Including the time they are required to be at the school before and after class, it's ~6.5 hours minimum. Every teacher I know puts in at least an additional 8 hours a week in marking, prep time preparation of IEPs, etc. Many teachers are involved with clubs or sports teams.
10 months a year <-- it's actually a little less
retire at 55 <-- Half true. Again, their pension is self-funded, because they pay more into it while working, the pension (not the board) allows them to retire earlier. If you paid more into your RSP, you could too.

In your response yeah

Most of your comments are laughable but the one that is most obvious jokes is the idea about working more than 5 hours a day. I just LOVE how teachers claim all this "prep time" is needed, yet teach EXACT SAME lesson plan year after year. Anyone who has ever repeated a grade can tell you what obvious bs this is. You also jokingly count things like clubs/sports as "work" lol
Marking taking extra time when most tests are scantron lol. And even at early grades does it really take so long to read a grade 2s math test? (well I suppose it might if you lost your answer key)

No teacher has EVER been layed off, no idea what world you live in
They call it surplussing when they have an extra teacher, which is only something the most junior teachers ever suffer from (and they still get to work, just not with as much stability, they can end up beings subs or admin)

I'm a bball fan and this is a quote from one of the coaches I admire, Frank Martin: “You know what makes me sick to my stomach? When I hear grown people say that kids have changed. Kids haven’t changed. Kids don’t know anything about anything We’ve changed as adults. We demand less of kids. We expect less of kids. We make their lives easier instead of preparing them for what life is truly about. We’re the ones that have changed. To blame kids is a cop-out.”

.
But not due to work performance. At Wal-Mart you get fired if you are useless. Your only concern isn't that the store may close.

If surplused you can then be labelled redundant if not enough spaces. If you get a contract you are golden but most teacher's college grads go many years before signing a contract.

Coaching is work.... football or putting on a play would be the extremes.

Counting class time only is like counting only a lawyers time in court.

But this is all besides the point.... no one was arguing that teaching is a bad gig. The topic is on are kids and parents changing...... the answer to that question is yes.

Kids are so over programmed my nephews and nieces have so little free time that they actually lack independence because they are shuttle from one practice, game to another. Getting on the bus and going to the mall is foreign to them.

If you've texted your kid while in the same house. I think that indicates that things have changed.

Kids stay home longer.... partly due to financial reasons but it tends to have harmful effects on their ability to be independent.

In addition to your rebuttals, I would add his mis-info about teachers funding their pension plan. They only fund a fraction of their indexed defined benefit pension.

when I went through the education system over 40 years ago, a teacher took pride in making sure the students understood and learned what said teachers were teaching. today they want kids to have calculators in math class by the time they get to grade 2.....handwriting and spelling are NON existent in schools these days....hell I know kids with college education that don't know how to sign their own name or how to write a cheque

Yes,...you and I guarantee their pension plan,...which was seeded by you and me.

Teachers are only fired if charged with a criminal offence.
