Are there any "Gated Communities" in the GTA?

I was just thinking about the American love of the suburub and "Gated Commnities" in particular.

I've never seen or been in a truly "gated community". I assume they build a big wall around it (perhaps a moat, or even electrified) to keep the rif raf out, then they install a couple of entrances complete with $12.00 an hour guards (maybe give them guns, or at least sticks) and they open and close electric gates to let the local residents in and out of the suburban fortress in their Escalades and bullshit like that.

Anyway, got me wondering if there are any similar such "Gated Communities" in the GTA.

Not faux gates like you see at Baby Point or High Park - but a real guard hut and you can't come in unless you're invited in.

How would that even work is another thing. Surely the city would never pay for roads and sidewalks and infrastructure if it's not a public place.

I would never want to live in a "Gated Community". I like living in the city. But I'm sure there are lots of suburbanites in Canada who would go for it.

All condo's are effectively Gated communities, and are some of the Higher end Rentals.

I've only been to one gated community where you needed a code to drive in, down in Austin Texas. I can't imagine living like that, needing permission to walk along a street you didn't live on. The people I was visiting liked it for the same reason I hated it.

Horner and Kipling in Etobicoke there is a special one. They have security cameras everywhere(hallways, doors, outside and I think that many security guys are armed. Oh, sorry it is the new jail but it looks like a 5 star hotel from the outside :)

Crystal Beach in Ft Erie Ontario, where the famous amusement park used to be, looks like it has been turned into a "Gated Community". Drove by there last summer and was surprised what they did to that property and how high black gates appear to circle the community now.

I think gated communities appeal to high profile entertainers, athletes, etc. who, I suspect, live there for privacy reasons.

Gated communities in GTA can never be compared to the ones in US.. gated communities here are usually in place to keep out cars only. People can easily walk in.

not just for high profile types... When I lived in Los Angeles, most apartment and town house complexes were gated. Had high steel fences surrounding the complex or apartment units were built like a fortress wall and amenities like tennis court, swimming pools, basketball courts etc were in the center. Its for safety reasons in US... There are always helicopters hovering above at night due to crime and gun shots outside the gated communities.

I've lived in two (they were great) and I can assure you I am not at all high profile.
