And does anyone think it is a good "business" decision? I know all the parties involved have denied the story but....

From another, related story:

Earlier in the evening, NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly issued a statement saying the league has no agreement to move the Phoenix Coyotes to Winnipeg or anywhere else if owners cannot be found to keep the team in Arizona.

Daly issued the statement in response to a report in the Phoenix Business Journal that Toronto billionaire David Thomson has an agreement in principle to potentially move the franchise back to Winnipeg if a buyer to keep the team in Arizona can't be found.

The league has been in talks with Thomson and Mark Chipman, who heads the company that owns the MTS Centre in Winnipeg, Daly acknowledged, “regarding their potential interest in owning an NHL franchise and potentially bringing an NHL franchise back to Winnipeg.”

“It remains an intriguing possibility and one we would consider given appropriate circumstances, but there is nothing new to report on that front at this time,” Daly said.

I wonder just what the "appropriate circumstances" would be?

The arena is not big enough (and can't be expanded) for an NHL team.

seems to me that if the number of seats are the issue in Winnipeg, David Thomson and his 34 billion dollar weath can work around that somehow.

THe fans supported the jets and so did the city. I had a friend who played for them and loved it. The problem was the Canadian Dollar at $.50 and the players making insane money. But I don't think either Winnipeg or Quebec City could afford a team nowdays either. There is not enough corporate money in either location, and the payrolls are going up. The strong dollar helps but can't be counted on in the long run. Would love to see the Jets back and the white shirts all through the building

The lowest the Canadian dollar has reached against the U.S. dollar is approximately 63 cents .

The N.H.L. Salary Cap is expected to drop by approximately $4,000,000 for the coming season.

Whether there is enough corporate money in Winnipeg or Quebec City is up for debate.
Very little of the corporate money floating around Phoenix seems to be making its way into Jobing.com Arena .

While no one can predict for certain where the Canadian dollar is headed long term, it is unlikely to hit the depths of the mid 60 cent range for quite a number of years.

They didn't support the team and lost it, who's to say they will now.
Denver, Philadelphia, Ottawa, Pittsburgh, St. Louis, San Jose(Oakland), and Minneapolis-St. Paul all seem to have done well with 2nd chances at teams.

So where Daly's comments only a twist of the knife in Balsillie's back?
True, the NHL doesn't want to deal with Ballsillie & they have their own guy here in Thompson. The team is playing very well & also drawing well. They should be able to sell them to another of their own guys. (Ice Edge?) The NHL doesn't like to move teams but now they have covered the bases with this. Either the Coyotes are sold & stay in Arizona or they move BACK to Winnipeg.

If and that's a big if they come back I don't think the outcome would be any different 15 years down the road.

The salary cap is dropping but is still about double what salaries were when they left the last time.

There is NO big private money in town that is interested in hockey. The Richardsons support the arts not sports and the Aspers love football. Plus the Aspers have bigger problems than football right now. They can't even get the football stadium off the ground, the Provincial Gov. stepped in this week to keep that deal from tanking. The highest profile hockey fan is Mark Chipman and he does not have the $$$$ to play in the NHL, Thompson does but how long does a guy lose millions and stay interested.

This is a cheap ass town, trust me I live here. People will be all over the jets for 5 years but get tired of paying what the NHL will cost in the long run. Manitoba is probably one of the poorest provinces right now and I don't think it's going to get better before it gets worse. We had a hard time selling tickets when you could get a good seat for $20.00, sure the Leafs, Habs, etc will always sell tickets but when it's -40 who will buy $80 tickets to see Tampa, Florida etc.

The entire market is about 1.2 million at best, about the same as the city of Calgary. Not big enough IMHO.

I would love to see a team here but sadly I really can't see it lasting any longer than it did last time.
