Is there always a winner with Lotto 649/Max? Or it could be that they have a winning number which was never sold?

Your odds are against 10000000000 to win...now imagine if you're up against those who launder money...they can spend hundreds of thousands and still not win the jackpot, but definitely have better odds than you.

The odds of the Max are so great that it usually carries over and maxes out often.
The 6/49 with better odds may carry over but hardly does.
More likely to have multiple winners in 6/49 than max though both have had multiple winners in the past.
It is quite usual to have certain combinations of numbers generated multiple times per draw.
It is quite likely that many combinations of numbers may never play, although hundreds of millions of combinations would have been generated per draw.
The OLG always wins.

No maxing out with our two biggest (multi state) lotteries, powerball and Mega Millions. They just keep growing till somebody wins. At least one reached nearly a billion dollars (on a $2 ticket) one time. Seems like the biggest winners are almost always in states where they can remain anonymous...

Odds of winning the 6/49 lottery are about 1 in 13.8 million. The math equation is 6!43!/49! - the exclamation point means factorial. In simple terms:

(6x5x4x3x2x1) X (43x42x41x40x39x38x37x36x35x34x33x32x31x30x29x28x27x26x25x24x23x22x21x20x19x18x17x16x15x14x13x12x11x10x9x8x7x6x5x4x3x2x1) divided by

49x48x47x46x45x44x43x42x41x40x39x38x37x36x35x34x33x32x31x30x29x28x27x26x25x24x23x22x21x20x19x18x17x16x15x14x13x12x11x10x9x8x7x6x5x4x3x2x1

Simplified, (43! on the top and bottom cancel each other out): 6x5x4x3x2x1 divided by 49x48x47x46x45x44

A huge difference between Canadian and American lotteries is that Canadian lottery winnings are NOT taxed. If somebody wins $100 Million in a US powerball lottery, they would pocket less than 20% of that amount.

Has anyone actually won the 1 in 13.8m?
Of course. It happens every time someone wins. On average, someone gets 6/6 about once every 5 draws. Keep in mind that tickets are $2 each, and probably more than 10 million tickets are sold for each draw.

I used to work with a woman who won the 6/49, about $4 million in the early 90's. She was an accounting clerk, probably being paid in the $25K per year range. She kept working for a few months, but management hounded her out of her job; they were jealous that she was in a subordinate position, but had a lot more money than they did.

So you have to guess every number exactly (out of 49) and in the exact same sequence as the computer generated draw, for 6 numbers, and you're saying someone wins this one of every 5 draws? For real? I don't understand how it's possible to win this 1/5 for a chance of 1/13.8 million.

Lotto and scratch tickets are only good for stocking stuffers where they fit in with all the other crap. Don’t use them otherwise.

I’m thinking when the poster said once every 5 draws they meant that there is one winner (amongst all the players) every 5 draws.

Why? Millions of tickets are sold for each draw. Somewhere in the realm of 2.5 - 3.0M. Say it's 2.5M, that means the odds of someone pulling a winning ticket is 2.5M/13.8M each draw (aka 1/13.8M, but 2.5M times). Which is pretty close to the odds of rolling a die and getting a 6.
