Email harvesting by computer programs on the net is how it is done.
By the way, never, never, opt out. By that, I mean when you get spam that says you can be removed from the list, by going to a web site and removing yourself.
What you are doing is validating your email address and increasing its value to about 2 cents. Your mailbox will be flooded pretty quickly.
