Please enlighten me. I heard or read somewhere that if someone doesn't complete the census, they will be sentenced to time in jail, or subject to a fine of $500.00. Is this really enforceable, and if so, how?? It would be a nightmare to track down and prosecute everyone. For the longest time, I thought participation was strictly voluntary.

thats what i heard and i think they have it posted somewhere, maybe on the website i think. Pretty sure it is enforceable though. But whether or not they choose to get someone in trouble is up to them i believe.

I too don't know exactly what the penalties are but for the 33.2 seconds it takes to fill out, why not just do it?

I mean really, what reason would you have NOT to?

They just make a few examples every year.

One of the few useful things my old man taught me: "DONT MESS WITH THE FEDS".

Its not illegal to not answer your door or answer the phone. For the first time ever, this has been outsourced to an american company. Under the Patriot Act in the US, any US government agency can access your information regardless of the so called Canadian laws.

I never realized that Statistics Canada was an American company. That's right -- Stats Can runs the census, and only Stats Can employees deal with your confidential information.

I think you have your facts wrong. CBC or CTV did a story last fall about the Canadian gov't sending the census off shore to India, while people in the IT industry could have done it here in Canada.

Jesus people, get a grip will ya? I mean, there is NOTHING in the census that can ever be used against you... so what if some US agency can find out that about me?...BFD Hell, if they did a search on canada411 they'd find out half the information about me that is on the census form.....

The questions are innocent at best and at worst, if they find out there are illegals living somewhere, all the better.

Not true as far as I am concerned Tboy. There is info that is required in the long form that I would not the US to be handling.

I am not fillilng mine out. I think it is outragous to force us. I don't have to open my door or answer my phone as others have said and instead of coming up with ways for Canadian people to want to fill things out, they make it law and jam it down your throat. So I say fuck 'em.

KWI
Paranoid.....that's what I call it....what questions are you referring to? How many people live in your home? If you've lived there for more than 5 yrs? If you live common law or are legally married in the usual sense? Most of the information on the form is already available from other sources.

So KWI, the next time the federal government shorts us on transfer payments because they say we don't have enough people, you can thank yourself, and others like you.

Same goes for school budgets, sanitation, garbage collection etc. They base all these services on information they collect through the census. So if everyone was like you, they would only need 1 garbage truck for all of scarboro because, afterall, according to their records, only 12 people live there....

Gimme a break will ya! I could understand people's aversion to filling it out if it asked you to account to what you spent all your disposable income on, or if you ever partook of illegal drugs, purchased an illegal firearm or something but sheesh, they're asking you where you lived for the past 5 yrs.....

OMFG, I just read through it...and those fucking bastards want to know how many hours you spent CLEANING, and if, fuckingnogoodsonsabitches if your home needs repairs!! HOW DARE THEY THE GALL OF THEM. I say we overthrow the government right away because what right do THEY have to find out how little or how much FUCKING HOUSEWORK I DO!!!!

Yes they can

They usally send people to follow-up if you you have not sent it in. They try to get you to do it. They can take it to court--lay charges, etc. The info is protected by strict privacy legislation.

I delined to answer the questions:

Are you a member of TERB? and How many times a year do you hobby?:D

The "info" on that "countmeout" site is about as reliable as a shill review on TERB.

If you don't want to fill out the census form, don't. It's a breach of federal law. You may be prosecuted, you may not. Take your chances if you wish. I don't care.

......BTW, in the long form they ask you about physical and mental health, 2005 income, unpaid activities, education levels, and many other things more relevant then where you lived 5 years ago, ......
Well, you DO know that all that information is already available via your tax returns? And there IS a part that says "do you want them to refer to your 2005 returns for all the following information"? So, yeah, you can use that as a reason, and I can understand your aversion to answering these questions if you didn't file a tax return in 2005. If you didn't, and you are a resident of canada, they WILL catch up to you anyways.....

I'm sure they could make that website uglier if they really tried, but it'd take some work

I didn't say anything about not answering the census based on those questions. You asked what questions where there so I answered you. They can catch up with me all they want. I personally don't care. I am not and have not and will not answer the census. I know what is accessible via my returns for last year and prior to, that is not why I am not filling out this census.

Why does it burn you so much that I have made the choice not to fill out the form???? Because you may be limited on the number of bags of garage you get collected?????? Like I said, tell them I didn't fill it out Tboy, i personally couldn't give a rats ass.

KWI
Well, I really couldn't give a rat's ass whether you fill it out or not, but that is the discussion going on throughout this thread so we are discussing your reasons not to and so far, all you've said is that you won't...not why you won't.

But judging from your responses it does bother you that I'm enquiring as to why you won't, so from now on, consider my queries as to why anyone wouldn't fill out the form to the other's on this thread that said they wouldn't.

But do us a favour, let us know what (if any) the ramifications are of your decision. I'm curious to know (and I bet the original poster of this thread will be too) what the result is.....

First Rumor: Will they come after you to fill out the form? Answer: YES! And they will be persistent, and they can and will fine and prosecute.

Second Rumor: Outsourced to the US? Answer: Yes and No. Did they purchase equipment to scan the documents rather than enter the data by hand? YES. Does the Census for stay in Canada along with the information? YES! Does the government allow any outside country access to your information in any way, othan through it's puiblic releases? NO

No information is shared with anyone except through normal Census document reporting.

Just feel lucky that you aren't one of the people they pick from litterally childbirth through to adult hood to do ongoing surverys.

How do I know? I was involved with the marketing of this years census and I asked those specific questions. Without the scanning of the documents it meant something in the area of 5 billion keystrokes to manually enter the data. This year the data will be available moths faster than in previous counts. Thats the only real change, a piece of equipment that allows them to recognize data and auto fill the data base.

Oh please. Like the poster above said, the *census* was not outsourced to some US company. That is some BS. Some US company provided a bunch of the equipment.

Do you also object to them using computers with Intel or AMD or apple processors? Please, get a grip, stuff is made in the USA. Canadians buy it. So what?
