I PM'd you a bunch too. But talk to folks about any neighbourhood before you move just to know what it's like.

417 and Carling is a pretty rough neighbourhood. Why not consider Westboro? That area is becoming trendy and is still pretty close to Carling and 417.

I have been in that area for years. I would suggest that its like anywhere...If you go too far one way or another you will find less favourable areas but in general to classify such a broad area as "rough" is not accurate, although I do know what you are implying by your warning.....

Sorry Kissmike. By rough neighbourhood, I meant dumpy. Nice apartments with respectable tenants are the exception in this neighbourhood. Especially in Kirkwood/Merivale area. Is that better?

I am moving and will be working about a 10-15 minute drive from downtown. Want to rent for one year, before buying again. Any good suggestions in the $1100-$1400 range (I am single)

Dumpy is the key word. No need to apologize as I understood the meaning of your post...The internet is a 1 dimensional medium thus I understood what you meant.......

How about.....

A weekend room or very small (ie. cheap) apt somewhere between the canal and Bank, ie. parallel to Elgin. I live about 2 hours outside Ottawa now, and am looking for a cheap place to hang my hat on weekends. A studio apt would be fine, or even just a room, if it had a private entrance and wasn't scuzzy/run down. Right now I just book into hotels in the area (Holiday Inn, ESD, Bostonian, Business Inn) but am looking for a place of my own. Any ideas?

I live near Lorry Greenberg...and I have a friend who lives there with her man. It's a decent area, from what I can tell anyway. It's a little farther South more near the Airport then Caling and 417

Central Ottawa and West end Ottawa are nice. Westboro in the west end as previously mentioned is nouveau trendy. Central, the Glebe is very nice. Avoid Vanier in the East end. Happy hunting. There are many nice neighbourhoods.
