Apple won't comment on Siri outage

"I'm sorry, Dave. I'm afraid I can't do that."

Such was essentially every response from the iPhone 4S's Siri voice recognition software yesterday, though without the wit or reference to a classic science fiction flick.

Users are still wondering what happened when Siri's connection apparently went offline yesterday. When asked any question, the digital voice assistant replied with answers like "Sorry, I'm having trouble connecting to the network."

The confusion is further exacerbated by Apple pretending nothing happened. The company did not make an official announcement about Siri's outage.

When customers called for technical support, they reported getting replies about Apple's servers being overloaded. But no other Apple services appeared to be affected.

Apple is not historically the best when it comes to insightful customer service or sympathizing with customers. One need only to look at the iPhone 4's "antennagate" issue to realize that Apple would rather create a media firestorm than apologize for an error.

Siri, which has gained worldwide acclaim for its seeming grasp of normal human language and its witty, non-robotic responses, is technically still in beta and thus subject to these kinds of random blips.

Nevertheless, it would be nice if Apple could acknowledge when something happens within its company that affects end users.

Again Apple showing that the customer comes first

well at least Canadians don't have to worry about it, seeing as Siri isn't fully functional here anyways.

I have a choice (new work phone) between an iphone & a Galaxy. I was leaning towards the iphone because of Siri.... Any opinions welcomed!

Siri is a bit more integrated into the iOS, but Android does have plenty of options like Jeannie and VLingo (which really works great).
The other things to consider, are battery replacement and having the ability to use an external memory card on your phone, Galaxy takes a microSD, iPhone does not.
Galaxy has a bigger screen and it`s absolutely stunning, iPhone`s is nice too, just not as big.
Here`s a good chart to show the differences.

Android is on par with the iPhone. Just not branded with the Apple logo.
You`ll be fine either way you go, but I`d have to give the edge to Android really, it has a few more options.
As for Siri, I use VLingo on my Galaxy but not as much as I though I would, a lot of times it`s still faster to press the shortcut on the screen, or hit send, etc.
Another thing to consider is texting and using Swype with Android, do a search for it and you can see for yourself.

I never thought I`d like it myself and thought it was just a gimmick, but it`s brilliant and I don`t type individual letters anymore.
It`s incredibly fast and you don`t have to be too accurate with it.

Btw, Siri won`t be fully functional for a year in Canada as b4u mentioned above.
