Apple pulls iOS 8.0.1 after users report major problems with update.

http://www.theverge.com/2014/9/24/6839235/apple-ios-8-0-1-released

One week after the launch of iOS 8, Apple released its first update for the new OS — iOS 8.0.1 — on Wednesday afternoon. It was meant to fix a slew of bugs, but that's not what happened. Immediately after the update hit, reports began flooding in that iOS 8.0.1 was breaking cellular reception and other features like Touch ID. Apple eventually removed the faulty update, but not before an untold number of users were able to install it. ""We have received reports of an issue with the iOS 8.0.1 update," a spokesperson told The Verge. "We are actively investigating these reports and will provide information as quickly as we can. In the meantime we have pulled back the iOS 8.0.1 update."

Those affected report that "no service" is displayed after iOS 8.0.1 has been installed, and toggling airplane mode or powering the phone off and on again doesn't seem to restore cellular reception. Both of Apple's latest iPhones seem vulnerable to the massive problem, though older models seem to handle the update just fine.
And people laughed when I said I was going to get a BlackBerry Z30, yet I haven't had a single problem to date!

Android has an alternative strategy, don't let people upgrade...

APPLE: IOS 8 ADOPTION REACHES 46%

IN CONTRAST, ONLY A QUARTER OF ANDROID DEVICES ARE RUNNING THE LATEST VERSION.

BY ALICE TRUONG
In the five days following Apple's release of its latest mobile operating system, the Cupertino, California-based company reported 46% of its mobile devices are running iOS 8.

The blog iClarified first spotted the figure, measured as of September 21, on Apple's App Store page for developers.

Apple began rolling out iOS 8 on September 17, but many users faced issues downloading the update because it requires 5 GB of free storage (the actual download takes up about 1 GB). Furthermore, users who have updated have complained about a slew of bugs, including slower speeds when connected over Wi-Fi and waning battery life.

The latest iOS breakdown points to one of Apple's strengths in mobile: Aside from the early adopters, 49% of devices are running iOS 7, and only 5% are on an earlier operating system. Google, in contrast, suffers from wide fragmentation, with only 24.5% of Android devices running its latest version of KitKat, released almost a year ago.

Likely Android users haven't downloaded the latest version because they're happy with the device as it is, whereas frustrated iPhone users have to have the latest OS because there's so many problems with the old versions. I have lots of friends with new and old Androids and they're all quite happy with their smartphones. My iPhone friends on the other hand can't wait to ditch their old one as soon as the next version comes out.

Although, it is typical of you when faced with another Apple problem to simply counter with "yeah but Android isn't as good, and Android doesn't sell as many, and Android doesn't have 64 bit, and Android doesn't make as much money"... When the fact remains that you simply can't acknowledge that Apple fucks up from time to time. I find that truly amazing!

Apple screwed the pooch on this, they had to pull it and release a point release last night to fix it... why is it some of you are obsessed with every mistake Apple makes?

It's not being obsessed with every mistake, it's the fact that you and djk think Apple is the be all and end all and everything else is shit. When you profess Apple is the second coming, you're going to get people pointing out their flaws.

Who really cares what OS you're running, is your dick bigger than mine? how about your TV?

The question is - is your smartphone doing what you need of it - and whether its bb10, android or ios it probably is. I still can't believe people are too dumb to realize this.

I'm amazed though, how some boast about Apple's finances that they can't put out a product that's perfect and doesn't need to apologize for its product(s).

Incredible.

Asswipe, who puts out a product that is perfect, and if it is should they apologize? And who forces anyone to buy any product?

Bingo - Apple is far from perfect, no one is saying that - the trolls are driven to distraction by Apple.

That's what I've been saying all along and the reason I chose a Z30. However, if you listen to djk and otb I made a bad choice by not buying an iPhone because they're the best and they are the most profitable and everyone has one. What they fail to understand is that Apple is not for everyone. Might be good for them but just because they sell lots of phones doesn't mean you're an idiot if you buy something else.

Yup. I remember that recently when someone was asking me a bunch of questions about Blackberry models and which one I should get, I answered his questions without bias and even recommended he wait for the Blackberry Passport if I recall correctly. Pretty sure you were chiming in too on that thread, too. Remember it? I'm such an Apple fanboy. ;)

lulz.

....
???

Really? Saying that android users don't always have the latest official version is a far cry from pretending android doesn't allow it. In fact there are hundreds of more than capable (and for some uses better) mods.

If people don't like or have issues with one of the official google releases they can easily find and install something else.

Many Apple users are not familiar with variety as they are use to getting mass produced generic solutions that match the crowd mentality and shuns individuality. It is like having a TV set that can only receive one channel. They get the same thing at the same time as everyone else. Android is about individuality and when Google releases their latest version, most manufacturers use it as a canvass that they add their own individual unique features. I can download new releases of Android (actually some custom versions) but I will loose the S-beam feature that allows me to share files and pictures on other Samsung devices. I don't mind waiting.

If you are an Apple user and curious about life outside your restricted spoon fed environment but afraid to leave big brother Apple - I would advocate Jaibreaking your iPhone. Big brother doesn't like this type of individuality and is constantly trying to block jailbreaking with each new release - but the rewards are amazing. I had true multi-tasking, file folders and unique gps features long before Apple engineers figured out how to provide them.

The only bad side of jailbreaking is that you can get use to the freedom and it could lead to ... Android !
