I just bought a single stage machine, but it took some doing. I got it from lawnmower/snowthrower specialty supplier.

Tried Lowes, Home Depot, Canadian Tire and most have one of the larger two-stage machines but not the single stage.

Apparently this is due to consumer panic from volume of snow we had to shovel last year. Plus the landscapers are choosing the smaller machines because they're light weight and decent quality (Toro/Honda).

Other Terbites finding the same?

Got a Toro single stage blower a few years back. Its OK but you need to not let the snow get too deep. If its up to your knees, you are screwed. I got the 6.5 hp model too-comes 5 hp also. But the snow gets it to the air intake and the motor starts losing power and then just stalls out, only happen twice to me but you out in Toronto have gotten more snow. You can blast the snow out at first but after awhile the heat from it starts to melt the snow and that is when it stalls.

Unless you can go out while the snow is coming down during a heavy snowfall, I would go with a daul stage HD model. Yeah it takes up more room but at least it work when you need it the most.

What's a snow thrower? Is that just another name for snow blower?
I found that this is the name most retailers and manufacturers use when you do a search on their websites.

Good, I thought I was the only one calling them snowblowers.
