Holding a ONE TIME poker tournament is not illegal. You are allowed to host one...not unlike your kitchen table parties.... take money..... and payout prizes.

It is when these places become gambling houses....... or a 'common gaming house' that there is a problem.

not unlike the other vice of 'common bawdy house'.

I like the idea of a one time event.

Guys pay..say 200...the cash gets awarded...and redeemed for ladies attention!

Yes there are winners and losers...but hey..THATS POKER!!!

No I do get it rubberboy..you are right. AS I MENTIONED..... If this is held in a COMMON BAWDY HOUSE...that too creates a problem. Common bawdy house must also be taken into account!

But really...to get a free coupon is not much different than us numpties responding to CUPIDS to get a FREE session when they run their contest on TERB!

if there is an organized poker game, anywhere...and no rake , it is legal...........if you have tournement style and say the buy in is 50$ plus 5$ for "pop" and "chips" its bordeline....if you organize a cash game with no rake , its not illegal...if there is a rake on each pot, then its illegal..or if you charge an entry fee, again...illegal

Tell that to your lawyer.

And if you're a bar owner, try telling it to the AGCO inspector who takes away your liquor license for violating the terms of that license (i.e. illegal).

There are legal ways of running a poker game, and there are illegal ways of running a poker game. There are games of skill, and there are games of chance. And despite the skill involved in poker, it is a game of chance: no matter how skilful you may be, you cannot affect what card is dealt next. And games of chance are strictly controlled in the Province of Ontario.

The bigger issue is whether this is an open invitation to a supposedly private club.

Who cares about the legalities of the poker game. I'd be worried about being found in a common bawdy house.

I'll take your word on it as I don't know the legalities and don't know (or care) where to look for anything to back up what you are claiming.

I still think it is a bad idea that puts a target on the club.

Like selling medical marijuana at a massage parlour!
Sorry for the late response as I have been bed ridden for the past 2 days due to illness. I thank you rubmeister for your comments and I will take all of that into consideration. Just to be clear the poker party is in no attempt a scheme to bring an influx of clients/business into our facility. The decision to change our facility into a social club was so that we could change it into an entertaining facility, hence the reason why we've already had toy parties and bachelor parties. A poker party was next on our TDL. We are aware of the legality in regards to gambling (which is illegal is a cut is taken), and are definitely not interested in having any negative publicity attached to our facility.

I will keep you all posted as I finalize all of the details.

Thank you everyone for your feedback in this thread. I am not sure how a poker thread turned into several conversations about operating a common bawdy house. I do not think it is necessary to explain our business and sex certainly would not be one of the prizes. The poker party was an event to provide us all with an evening of fun and not an attempt to gain further business as our club is doing well at its early stages. Due to the many mixed opinions I have decided to no longer have a poker party as it seems that just the topic alone brought up too much controversy and negative skepticm. In the future if I do decide to hold a poker party it will most likely be free (therefore consisting of no gambling) and will be by invitation only.
