who are the fair skinned women? I'm guessing not the Southerners where its very hot. xD Probably not Punjabi too because the Sikhs seem to be a religious type. This is very much a generalization, but the very lightest skinned are from Kashmir, also Rajistan the Punjab, and Uttar Pradesh the darkest from south India, although just showing that this is not fixed in stone Sinhalese are fairly light skinned.

I have a question, is it rude to ask what cast someone is? I am very unfamiliar with their customs and I had an Indian nurse/midwife and I have been uncertain on what is polite.

you know what i've come to realize.. its best to view each person with their own unique characteristic and don't have any expectations before hand by race or region. I've been taken by surprise waayyy too many times, often to my own disappointment or even offending the other, because I had prejudged someone based on their race or where they come from etc. xD

I'm no expert but my sense is that it would be considered rude. I've asked a couple of East Indian people about the caste system out of my own curiousity and the conversation became awkward both times.

It seemed to me like it was a part of their history that they are not proud of and did not want to discuss, especially with someone from outside of their culture.

My 2 cents.

i think its complex and just the way you asked.. Indians aren't just different based on religion. I think some have divisions and cast systems even within a similar group like the untouchables, who cannot marry into a higher cast because they're considered the lowest of lows or so I believe.
