My father has a Dell and has had no problems with it at all (a good thing since he wouldn't know what to do if he did!) - I have a Dell laptop (Latitude C800) and it's worked great.

We use Dell at work. About 20 people here altogther have Dell for the last two+ years (use to have Macs) and have never a problem with any of them.
Wow....that must be a record of some sort.

Most of the DELL stories I heard were good but some were also bad. I guess no PC maker is perfect.
Their tech support is much better now that they've stopped outsourcing to India.

The thing I liked about them is that I got approved ovber the phone for financing in 10 seconds and everything comes basically in one package. You dont have to go looking for compatible parts and software.

In the last 6-7 years I've owned 5 Dell desktops plus two laptops. I also know or have worked with many people who have owned Dells over that period of time. In total, a couple of dozen systems. None of these systems has ever had a serious problem. According to Consumer Reports only Apple (~11%) and Sony (~13%) have had better repair records than Dell (~13.2%). Overall Dells are cheaper so they provide better value for the buck.

My Dell laptop has only been a joy

I use the hell out of it and it has certainly been the best computer I have ever owned over IBM x 2, IPC and Toshiba x 2

I luv my Dell

In deference to n_v's comment Dell does seem to have a larger than average "advertising cost" mark up but it is a joy to use

Windows XP is great. No crashes.
If you're having problems it's probably because of spy- and adware. Try running ad-aware and Spybot, which are both free.
After 1 week of surfing I usually have a few hundred spyware programs on my PC.
I wanna meet the Fu*cker who designs these things!!!

dell sucks

Have a Dell 8600 and it is a piece of shit. I have had a constant problem especially working in Word and Excel where the the cell jumps all over the page. I would be typing in cell B22 and it would all of a sudden shift to H3, same in Word, typing a sentence and all of a sudden it skips down 5 lines. Dell said warranty expired, tough luck. Never again

we used to buy dells at my previous employer - what is great is that you can congire it exactly as you want. only had one problem, which was some bad memory. they talked me through it on the phone rather than sending someone out - so i ended up doing all the work.

one thing i like about dell, as opposed to compaq etc., was that nothing was proprietary - i am not sure if compac and ibm etc. have changed. laptops might be a different matter.

i have a dell at home - it is fine. a friend who is a real techie, and used to build and sell computers, sneers at the mention of dell - like anything, the parts are not the best, but you are getting what you pay for. my concern would be some of the local/no-name comptuers advertised in the paper or sold through future shop etc.

one thing with dell - keep a close eye on the ads - sometimes they advertise no shipping costs, and thats the best deal!

I've owned several Dell desktops and a couple of Dell laptops over the years -- rarely had a problem, and the one time I did (lightening fried my modem card), Dell replaced it in a free and timely fashion.

The other thing I liked about Dell was that I could lease to own. This offers a tax benefit, as you can write off your lease payments, whereas if you bought outright, you'd have to go the Capital Cost Allowance route -- which I don't think ever really works out advantageously with computers.

A tech savy friend thinks their components are cheap, especially on laptops but their service makes up for it.

I am talking to you from a Dell Latitude D600 and have never had a problem.

Several of my colleagues have fried the hard drive but our IT guy said something about "corruptions" and "viruses". It's all greek to me!

I do find the damn thing a tad slow sometime though!
