Doing some outdoor reno work...(building a new deck) and found 2 awkward looking spiders.

they were in 2 different locations, about 25 feet apart from eachother. no signs of an infestation. they are big, well, big for around here. about the size of quarters-bigger if legs were stretched out, black and hairy. small white and red spots on its back. furry legs. they seem a little intimidated by my presence and are actually fairly elusive. they can jump small distances- @most about 3 inches... i'd say they look alot like small tarantulas but, i know that those are more tropical species and couldn't endure our winters...

anyone have an idea of what these creatures are?

kinda looks like my sig pic, though from this pic, I have no idea what size this one is... if anything, the one's in my yard looked alittle furrier and had less markings... but, the same general shape.

An interesting post, Mr. 21pro. Please don't take this question the wrong way; but you didn't kill these spiders upon their discovery? I ask only because I know that many people dislike spiders. Sincerely, Jon .

no, but i tried to catch one. as mentioned in my first post, they are pretty elusive- quickly hopping into the grass and scurried away.

ps- i can see why most dislike spiders... my skin was crawling after discovering the 2nd one! btw- no spiders were injured in my experiment...lol... thanks for your concern.

i am somewhat concerned because i have 2 valuable sport dogs that play in the same area of my backyard. i wouldn't want either to get bit.

Ask Willow, Lady Widow Spyder. She is very knowledgable about spyders.

i'm wondering if they somehow got transported back with me from Arizona (i might be opening a business there so i am back and forth alot)... the thought creeps me right out. they seem like a species that would be found there instead.. but again, i don't know much about spiders...

Vet says spiders gotta go- they'll kill my poochies. No choice but to Call and book exterminator.

apparently the pesticide is quite potent and I have to send the dogs packin' for a few weeks. I've decided to take the opportunity to go to Arizona and Vegas, etc.. for a month...

BTW- they've been identified as a variety of goliath bird-eating spiders. They are quite rare in Ontario and probably came in with produce imports from Central American... I've found more in the forest behind me (there is a large produce storage facility on the other side of the forest) and managed to catch one the size of a 'tea-cup' saucer. No big webs or anything... but, these spiders can move quite fast and act pretty aggressive, so I'm sure they are of a hunting variety.

When it comes to spiders...Napalm is an acceptable weapon!

Scared to death of the little scurying rat bastards!

And what is is about a garage that makes them breed? The gardening tools or the auto fumes? Garages always freak me out. I'm constantly looking for them

I have a few spiders but they don't bother me. When you have spiders...you don't have any other 'crawlies'.

Spider bites.......

I'm no expert on spiders and I'm not afraid of them at all. However, my friend who lives in the Kingsway was bitten by one while he was asleep and I was surprised by the damage. The bite looked like someone took an ice-pick to his leg and when he eventually saw a doctor, he was informed it was infected. The doctor also told him he was wise to have come in to have this checked out before the infection really got going.

I'm sure most spiders are harmless, but I hope I never get a bite like that!

All I know is that they never shave their damn legs and tend to be clock-watchers. I'd pass if I were you.
