I've been to Toronto, but I flew. I was contamplating driving, but I live in central Virginia.

I was wondering how many terbites are from US and how long it takes you to drive, to NF or on Toronto.

If you're from my neck of the woods, PM and maybe we can carpool sometimes.

Thanks for the info!

The Mapquest estimate is in line with the one from Yahoo Maps.

I was hoping for someone's actual experience, since these estimates may may not be real accurate.

I always drive from Toronto to Virginia to visit family members.

If you live in central Virginia it would be best for you to grab Interstate "81 North" which will take you straight to Interstae "90" take it westwards towards Buffalo and the Canadian border. It takes me about 10 hours from Virginia to Toronto, traffic included. I'm very acquainted with Alexandria, Raonake and Fredericksburg, Virginia. I-81 takes you across a tiny section of West Virginia and across the entire state Pennsylvannia, trust me, it's the shortest route to come to Canada.

PAPA, are you coming Virginia-Toronto or are you going Toronto-Virginia?

Anyways, either way it's the same, if you are coming from Virginia to Toronto, take the I-95 North to Washignton DC's "ring-around-the-capital" freeway. Take it Westwards. Then you will come to a freeway called the 278 or the 288 that leads to Maryland. Take it and drive along it for about 40 mins to 1 hour. It will lead you to "81" North. Take it and it will take you to I-90 in Albany,NY after 5 hours. Take I-90 westwards and come to Buffalo. Cross the border and take the QEW east. It will take you right to Toronto.

If you are going to Virginia take the same steps but backwards. Take the QEW west to Buffalo, the I-90 East to Albany and then the 81 South to Washignton DC, and then the I-95 south. Simple as that. Watchout on the way from Albany to Buffalo,NY on I-90, I have never seen a freeway so chockefull of greedy cops with radar guns every 5 miles throughout the entire 350 mile trek betwen these two cities.

It looks as if you are taking a long route taking the 81 North because it's way west of your location but remember that Toronto is west of you so it's only logical, if you take the traditional way of using the I-95 North you will drive through clogged New Jersey and eastren New York state needlessly, when in fact the 81 takes you to the I-90 NY too without the traffic and the extra 200 miles. 81 North is a broad highway of empty fields & farms and fast-going sporadic traffic.

I-81 crosses I-90 at Syracuse, not Albany.

Another slightly longer but easier traffic route from Virginia to Toronto is to stay on I-81 past Syracuse and enter Canada via Ivy Lea (1000 Islands) and then take the 401 west to Toronto.

There's a new I-99 that goes north through central Pennsylvania up nearly to State College, with very little traffic. You have about 100 miles of non-interstate, mostly on US 219 if I remember correctly, from Bald Eagle/Clearfield PA to Buffalo, but 9 1/2 hours of easy driving will get you from central Washington to Toronto by that route.

I think that's a lot better than going the long way round--but if you just have to stay on Interstates, you won't use that route. The 100 miles of non-interstate is lovely and scenic, but twisty in places, and if you get behind a slow truck on the hills, it can be slow for a while. But I like it!
