i , have a 2005 r1200gs (bmw)...heated grips; balaclava under the full face helmet, Helly Hansen long Johns and Helly T shirt. final top layer is a bib style quilted on the inside, thick nylon barn pants, plus an Olympia 3 in 1 riding jacket. even though there was frost on the grass and it was only 3 degrees this morning i was quite toasty for my 7:30 a.m. three and a half hour ride.. nothing beats the back twisty roads of Eastern Ontario on a brilliant blue sky, calm sunday morning with the fall colours in full bloom and Smokey still asleep at the station.

I had to retire my motorcycle after the "ramp incident" but took up biking (very carefully) again this Summer.

the layers are all high tech synthetics..the bib overalls are no thicker than a snowmobile suit sorta deal..but hey..it extends the season till the snow flies so i'm good. GS's are ugly to begin with. those who ride them are typically riding oriented rather than "cruise to the next Timmies type posers"

Your place!!
Was out Friday for about 3 hours and today Sunday for a couple more. Have a really good leather jacket and chaps and don't feel the cold. Hope too keep riding until November. :)

Question to riders, when you stop do you put both your feet on the ground and duck walk when starting to move again?

What do instructors have to say about this?

if you are starting out riding, it's ok to duck walk but you should really be using the throttle and clutch to get the bike moving. If you duck walk to start the moving process, it doesn't really accomplish anything when your main concern is letting the clutch out and applying throttle without stalling the bike. I'm not too sure if instructors will comment on the duck walk during the test(you should ask them) but you should really learn the friction point of the clutch since every bike is different. Just play around with the clutch and don't worry about stalling the bike.

.... then questions like the above come up, among others.

duck walk is a no no.

you have to start from the ready position, right foot on rear brake, hands on grips, not levers, and left foot on the ground.

as soon as you move off, left foot comes on peg. when you come to a halt, left foot down only

the duck walk is a true
sign of an untrained, unskilled amateur, much
like the goofs who ride in shorts, t-shirts and sandals

If my dumber than dirt ex can learn to ride a bike, anyone can ;) Most people are just a little intimidated at first, so start small and take the course. You won't regret it...

That's a nice bike, WWguy - damn nice. I used to have a 2008 K1200R Sport. BMW makes a helluva motorcycle.

Be careful out there
