Sorry boys, but this guy is just George Bush who went to Vietnam.

Last week, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) said it “would be fine with” him if the U.S. military stayed in Iraq for “a hundred years” or even a “million years.”

Fifty-nine percent say the U.S. should “stick to a withdrawal timetable” instead of keeping “a significant number of troops in Iraq until the situation there gets better, even if that takes many years.”

But on CBS’s Face the Nation, McCain claimed that Americans would not be “concerned” if the U.S. spends “10,000 years” in Iraq:

McCain said:
The point is it’s American casualties. We’ve go to get American’s off the frontlines, have the Iraqis as part of the strategy, take over more and more of the responsibilities, and then I don’t think Americans are concerned if we’re there for one hundred years or a thousand years or ten thousand years.
/
Please. Americans won't be concerned if we are in Iraq for another 100 years?

Has McCain become GWB's sock puppet?

American troops have been in Germany for over 60 years and no one gives a flying whirl-a-gig. It's about the American casualties.

jwmorrice is correct. Its about casualties. Do any of the other "serious" candidates advocate complete withdrawal from Iraq? I doubt it. At best, they want American troops to withdraw from combat situations and remain on the permanent bases they have constructed in Iraq. At least McCain is being honest on that point. There is no real debate about complete withdrawal from Iraq.

Oh stop now!!!

Americans have Bases..consulates..diplomats in over 100 countries...the Army has presence in over 125 I believe...and they are invited there by the host countries.

Iraq is a little more work...but well worth it.

Please know that American presence WILL be there for many many many mnay years....

And if you think Obama or the Democrats are gonna get elected and suddenly save all the Army in Iraq you will be sadly mistaken. Oh they promise...but REALLY...It will be status Quo!!

Exactly. Well put. McCain's just being honest about the iraq policy, and for that I wouldn't hate him but admire him. He's only willing to win power if he can do so by levelling with his countrymen...that takes a boatload of character in my book. On the other hand, being the backbone of law and order in the world is probably starting to wear on Americans...it's expensive and they don't seem to get too much credit for doing it.

Well, let's not equate consulates and diplomats with army bases. And let's not pretend that its a simple case of being "invited there by the host countries." All kinds of pressure is exerted, including invasion and installation of governments that are sympathetic with American goals. The US Army was not invited to Iraq by the government, they were not asked to build permanent military bases, nor will they leave if they are requested to do so by the Iraqi government. But I am glad that we can agree on one thing, that the US Army is in Iraq for the long haul.

After all the "Chickenhawk" B.S. that has been posted on TERB over the past several years I'd think that those who have been using that term would be singing the Star Spangled Banner when it came to Senator (Captain) McCain! Too much to hope for I suppose.

I'm far from thrilled with his (idiotic) ideas this past year on immigration, but other than that major objection I think he'd make a good President.

I'm for building a wall, just like Europe, and a guest worker program.

How much "law and order" in the world do you see as a result of American actions today?

I'm not talking about decades ago (Marshall Plan, NATO, Peace Corps, UN, etc) ... I mean TODAY.
Has NATO moved East or Russia moved West?

Wasn't that the communists who built the wall in Europe? You can't be serious. The US border with Mexico runs nearly 2000 miles.

Reading seems to be challenging for you. I asked about the US TODAY, not yesterday. Your question is answered by yesterday ... to wit

Eisenhower won the Cold War the day US decided to support independent economies for Europe (i.e. let Germany, Japan, Britain, France, etc grow their economies on their own, with US financing, rather than becoming "vassals" of the US the way Poland, Czechoslovakia, etc. etc were of Soviet Union)
vs. the Soviets trying to bankroll everyone as satellites of themselves. That one decision guaranteed the Russians would be bankrupt inevitably, because one country can't compete against 5 or 6 growing at the same time, which was what Hitler forgot when he tried his version of the Soviet model.

The Soviets were bankrupt decades before Reagan, as their own records show ... only the Arab oil embargo propped up oil enough to keep them from total collapse, which was pretty closely connected to US policies in the region. Said another way, the US threw the Soviets a lifeline, but it was only temporary, as they were so damn broke it didn't matter.

However, since you also asked about Russia vs. the US today, a comment ...

Under your favourite moron, Russia has rebuilt its military capability, another lifeline via war has multiplied oil, etc. to help Russia rebuild its economy, and now Russians are actually more liked in much of the world than Americans, all because of the stupidity of this regime.

So the Russians have expanded out of their box in a big way, and Americans have no choice but to contract from the fantastic global position they had before your man took over.
Is March 2004 close enough for the "today"?

EU to build wall after blasting Israel's
'European hypocrisy is as rank as it is blatant'

Just one month after the U.N. and EU launched a furious campaign against Israel's security fence, culminating in the International Court of Justice ruling that the fence is illegal, the EU announced it's planning to build a separation fence of its own, and invited Israel to participate in the construction.

The fence is being built to separate recently added EU members Poland and Hungary from their new neighbors – Russia, Belarus and Ukraine. The EU said the fence is necessary to "prevent the free movement of migrants seeking to enter" EU territory.
