I just saw the thread about pizza and tips.
Let me ask a question. Do any of you tip your gas attendant? The person who comes out, asks nicely how much you'd like, fill it up, check your oil and wipe your windshield. I'd love to see how many peolpe actually tip the gas attendant.
The reason why I wonder is simple. I own a gas station among other investments. Well to be precise, I own a money pit that is constantly losing money because of fucked up oil prices with close to zero margin on profit that can only be offset by the sales in snacks. We used to be full serve but decided the loss in revenue was increased by paying attendants and so was basically forced to go self serve. In the time we were full serve, the attendants very rarely got tips. I think it was more common to see 4 meteor showers in a single hour than it was to see someone tip a gas boy.
My opinion is that they should be tipped. No I do not garnish the tips. Whatever my employees make in tips is none of my business. They work hard and deserve the tips, if and when they receive.
Just think about it. The gas boy is checking your oil, cleaning your windows AND pumping that stinky shit into your car so that you don't have to get all smelly. Why shouldn't they be tipped? Now before you start on the full serve is more in price, that's just not true. Traditionally, full serve used to be 2-4 cents more per litre but since the increase in gas prices, it's been harder to put a premium price on service in the petro fuel industry. Simply put, full serve is usually sold at the same price as self serve, at least in most rural areas.
You'll pay a waitress/waiter a 15% premium although the only thing they do is take your order and carry it to you. I'm not saying that their job is not riddled with bullshit because it is. My parents owned a restaraunt when I was a child and I saw first hand how crappy it was to be a waitress/waiter, at times.
The point I'm trying to make, in a ridiculously long winded way , is that people will tip some service providers but not others. Why?
