I think any large explosion takes that shape. And a couple thousand tones of ammonium nitrate would do that. That would be close to 10% of the power of the nuclear bomb that destroyed Hiroshima...if I did the math right. Ammonium nitrate is similar to TNT in power.

This is actually not true, its the shockwave that kills almost everyone.
The radiation is carried away by the wind relatively quickly.
Some people will die from cancer or leukemia a few years later (usually kids or old people), but not everyone does.
Hiroshima was rebuilt very quickly after the US dropped their nuke on them, and today has no dangerous levels of radiation
