Roy Cohn was a Republican superstar who represented Donald Trump when The State Department charged him with contravening The Fair Housing Act. He was also active in The House Un-American Activities, a close ally of Joseph McCarthy. And he lead the prosecution team that sent Soviet spies Julius and Ethel Rosenberg to the electric chair. That was his professional life, his leisure time was something totally different.
This disturbing and thoroughly brilliant black comedy only has an 8.3 rating on IMDB. With good reason, no one wants to be reminded what a scourge AIDS was in the 80's and early 90's. Black comedy died with director Mike Nichols, it's just too difficult to pull off and easy to fuck up. Nichols has a stellar cast led by Al Pacino and Meryl Streep. This is where audiences first took notice of Marie Louise Parker, she steals scenes as a sexually repressed housewife driven to Valium abuse by her closeted husband (Patrick Wilson). Meryl Streep has a duel role as an upright Mormon mother and the specter of Ethel Rosenberg. All are excellent but this is Alfredo Pacino's mini-series. As Roy Cohn, he gives what arguably is the performance of his career.
This show will make people uncomfortable - and I'll probably watch it for a second time.
