Can anybody recommend a cheap 7" android tablet? I don't care for tablets, but I think I should get one to see if I can get used to getting with the times. I want to see if I get used to it, and maybe buy a more powerful 10" later.

XSCargo has 7" tablets for $37.97 link: http://tinyurl.com/bpeqhk6
It's an Android 2 reader - rather limited. I prefer that they have an expandable memory (Samsung and I think Nexas don't) so you can load movies/ music apps and make the most of it. GPS adds a lot more flexibility so that even after you move up to 10" whatever- you will still have a cheap flexible unit for travelling, the car, the boat, etc.

I'm thinking of getting a tablet (smaller and lighter) to replace my laptop (6 pounds). Can a tablet replace a laptop?

it could if you don't do to much with your laptop. i do a lot of writing and movie downloading and i wouldn't try to be writing anything of any length on a tablet. really i wouldn't write nothing more than an email opn a tablet and the amount of movies i download would crush a tablet. if you are just using it for day to day basics so you don't have to carry the laptop around but keeping your laptop at home for serious use then yes i would go for it.

I did and never looked back. I hated carting my portable around, it was cumbersome on airplanes and I was one of those guys you see in airports huddled around a power outlet trying to recharge before the next fight. My choice was the ASUS transformer. It is a 10" fully featured Android tablet with a folding docking station that has additional battery, standard USB port. Samsung & Google have not included memory expansion hoping to push cloud offerings but if you are travelling you can hit areas that the cloud isn't available (airplanes, remote locations, etc) not to mention high data roaming charges but ASUS does have memory expansion.

I use OfficeSuite Pro which I find is not quite Microsoft Office but handles my needs while I'm travelling. The base holds a second battery so you can easily get a travel for a day without a charge. It easily slides into a zipped binder I use so I am not hauling the additional computer bag. One other great aspect is that you can load your own movies and books then just remove the base in flight and use the tablet only.

The specs: http://eee.asus.com/en/transformer-infinity/specification/

I was a little nervous when I left mine home but what ever your choice is, I think you really feel great leaving the clunker at home.

I feel your pain. What was the cost of the Asus?

Mine was bought almost a year ago (tablet & base) ~ $750. With prices and new technology - I don't know what the price is or if there is a better product. I usually check things more closely when I'm buying. I recommend trying it. I saw my friend's and that did it for me. I like the keyboard combo.

Good luck !

I would go for the Google Nexus 7 (I'm using it to browse TERB right now). I had the 10 inch Asus Transformer 2 and that's collecting dust right now. Nexus 7 is much more portable and literally fits in your pocket. Another advantage is you will get the latest Android update far quicker than other manufacturers.

Does it have an memory expansion slot ? My SA has the Acer Icona A100 7" tablet (over a year old now) and I could load her music & movie for her with the 32GB memory card. She likes it because it is small and easily fits in her purse. For her it is good but I couldn't use it. It's also far too big to fit in my pocket.

If your ASUS is gathering dust - I'd sell it because it obviously is ill suited for your requirements and you it's not appreciating sitting on a shelf. I require the keyboard, expandable memory, normal USB socket (my critical / sensitive files are on a stick on my key ring), long battery life and a larger screen for my business documents. 15" -> 10" is a bit of a pain on my speadsheet but I can't imagine going to 7" (assuming I get an external keyboard so I don't need the touchscreen).

The issue of connectability is the main reason I have yet to buy a tablet. My trusty but sadly departed Netbook had 2 sd slots and 3 usb slots. It appears that you have to get by with One mini usb slot on a tablet.

My tablet keyboard base has a standard USB connector that supports USB memory stick - not sure if you could put a USB hub on it for expansion. I just use it for travel not a primary work station.
