Confirmation bias is a real phenomenon, as are self-fulfilling prejudices of varying kinds. There's ample evidence from social psychology that we're constantly misjudging one another (and for that matter ourselves, though that's less directly relevant here) in countless ways. Maybe there's some merit in making an effort to be skeptical of the stereotypes, even if they seem true, since they'd probably seem true even if they weren't.
