American police shoot black man in coma
Four American officers declare that it was self-defense, as they in a hospital shot and killed a 43-year-old black man who has been unconscious since 2009.
Six years ago, the former janitor James Kirk was in a traffic accident in which he suffered serious injuries in the neck and back of the head.
Since then he has been admitted to NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital without regaining consciousness.
The night between Friday and Saturday he died after being hit by gunfire from four police officers in his hospital room.
Matched signalement
Police Eric McGovern explained at a press conference yesterday, what led to the tragic incident and why the officers were compelled to defend themselves by force of arms.
"What happens is that the four officers receive notification that a middle-aged black man, who has been involved in a shooting, fled into the hospital grounds. After arriving entrepreneur ushers extensive efforts where the ground 173 identifies a man that completely matched the description of the person, "he explains, and continues:
"When they ask the suspect lay on his stomach with his hands over his head, he reacts not at all, but the situation is completely passive and refusing to obey police instructions. At the same time, we can see that he through various hoses in contact with highly suspicious machines, they can not exclude, can be used as weapons. "
Moving eyelids
Then the situation is, according to the chief of police dramatically when the suspect, despite several increasingly loud calls to surrender, the situation was completely inactive.
"When he makes a suspicious movement with the right eyelid, officers unfortunately had no alternative but to defend itself."
Eric McGovern said that preliminary studies indicate that in the case of an unfortunate mistake, since an examination of the killed records indicate that he has not been able to move for years.
Police chief stresses, however, that the case illustrates the importance of complying with police instructions and that the case could have been avoided if the suspect had done this.
