What was so toxic about Carter's presidency ? Other than amnesty for draft dodgers, I thought he did nothing but smile at everyone for four years. As for Abraham Lincoln, the south was already forming a confederacy before he was elected. As for the start of hostilities - the first shots was in the form of an attack on Fort Sumpter by confederate troops.
That and for the last year of his presidency, he was unable to release the US hostages held in Iran.

The CIA were no better than Keystone Cops during Carter's Presidency. They botched the intelligence on the rescue attempt in the summer of 1980 and they almost exposed the Americans within the Canadian Embassy. Ken Taylor and Flora McDonald must have lost their shit.
Carter was a total joke. The economy was in absolute tatters over his tenure and it got progressively worse. He signed over the Panama Canal to the dictatorship. He scrapped the wheat deal with Russia which increased Cold War tensions. He presided over the Iran hostage crisis which was a complete embarrassment for the US. Weak inept leadership which led to him getting spanked in the 1980 election by Reagan. Yeah Reagan was so bad. He transformed the US from a weakened state in 1981 to a global superpower by 1989 and won the Cold War. Created the largest number of middle class taxpayers in the country's history. Reigned in inflation and dropped unemployment by half. The only thing he failed at was balancing the budget but that was partly due to the house being controlled by Democrats.
