Opps sorry PC please - "Afrocentric" school favoured in Toronto.

Are you kidding me?

Segregation? Didn't several generations of people fight against this idea? Calling Dr. King. Dr. Martin Luther King.

I guess this has being going on for a while but they had a vote in the school board trustees last night and it was passed 11-9 to build this school?

http://www.torontosun.com/News/TorontoAndGTA/2008/01/30/4801254-sun.html

OK then. . . . I guess we can build and publically fund all white schools now? All oriental schools? All east Indian schools? All martian schools?

Yep great idea - let's start dividing kids up by race now. That's really inclusive.

So much for Toronto being multi-cultural.

Incredible.

Every time I see the news in Toronto, I can't help but think "We are becoming more and more like the USA every day" and not in a good way.

I used to make fun of my American buddies for the "black-focused" schools they have in the south, that blacks feel the need to create a school catering to themselves since the US system failed them. There goes that argument.

I love this quote in the story from a community worker who is spearheading this insanity. I especially like the word "angrily". Whaaaaaaaat?

"This is a school where all children could come in and be nurtured and supported into success," Donna Harrow said angrily. "No one ever said little white children couldn't come."

Give me a frick'in break. Imagine if she was saying this about an all white school where "little black children" could still attend.

Incredible stupidity.

And if the universities do not recognize or appreciate the curriculum in these schools, how does that help them career wise?

Next thing you know, people will be asking why we don't have a "Martin Luther King" day. This project is going to fail. If a kid whats to drop out be them black or some other colour. Then they will drop out. If I had wanted to drop out, my parents would have KICKED my ASS! This kids just need some motivation, a good kick in the ass. What job will they get other then low paying or illegal? They need to finish school. We're already have to social goups in Canada. We have English speaking and French speaking Canadians. Now we have black parents or social trouble makers, requesting a school that teaches different subject matter? How many "white" parent will want to send their kids to this school? Why not have a school that teaches kids that want to learn and the ones that don't, put them into another school. Where they will get smaller classes with more teachers. But if a kid doesn't want to learn, what are you going to do? Let him walk and just spend his or her days playing or hanging at the mall?

For some reason, some black activists feel young Afro-Canadians get a raw deal in the education system, or somehow the system is failing them, etc. But I still don't get it. I discussed this with 3 different black friends of mine, all of whom are offended by the idea that there is a need for such a school. Nor do they see the need for it. As one friend put it, "Are they going to teach science, math, english etc. differently in a black school?"

It's a stupid idea.

All the previous black leaders campaigned for equality. So, guys like Martin Luther King were wrong?

What's even more insane is that idiotic school board voted in favour of the proposal.

It won't help black kids one iota. The world is how the world is.

If black kids are having problems at school, I think they need to look into the home life of those kids.

I am in favor or nutral as long as it is completely private with absolutely NO government assistance.

I remember going to all Japanese school to mainly focus on math and Japanese when I was younger every saturday morning and it was not funded by government. Yet, thanks to the school I can now read Japanese semi-fluently and write enough to get by. My math grade in North American public schools were considered outstanding, yet I was struggling and below avarage at Japanese school at same grade level.

I am not in favor of funding any religious schools by government as they have better way of spending people's hard earned tax dollars.

Seems to me that our "progressive" city is reverting to the segregation that the southern US was known for a few decades ago...

I don't agree with it. People as a whole have come to far, and there is still more of a road to travel. I think an all black school will just help to incite more clash of the "nations'

I've seen some reasonably intelligent posts by you, so I will choose to believe you aren't that stupid, ignorant or uneducated. Of course...I could be wrong.

Not all black students are problem students. Maybe if we put all the problem students together in this school, and then relocate the school to Kingston, Jamaica, a lot of our gang problems will be solved.

The school will be a zoo.It will be populated by kids that are having trouble in their present school. It will become a dangerous dumping ground. What parent would send their children if they are doing fine in the public system? What curriculum will have to be dumped to make room for "black studies"?I don't know of Irish,Russian,Chinese etc. studies being courses in the regular schools.

it can work, though it can backfire too. my concern is that it will attract poverty, creating a segragacious system and perhaps attracting the worse teachers in the system.

something like the Los Angeles County School System...

If I was black, fresh from Jamaica and yet was a middle class member with a good job and hopes for to give the best to my kids- I'd definitely avoid enrolling them in such a school. though, I'd consider a black private school... how's that sound?

For your childs sake, I hope you are joking.

In the real world an education counts , not some feel good posturing by a bunch of do gooders who will no doubt search out some crap to teach, while kids in other schools learn math and science.

No University worthy of the name will ever give credit for these "classes" unless forced to under some as yet to be developed affirmative action program.

No matter how much coddling theses kids will get thru the school system and how "high" an education they can get through it with some "second class" degree, it all ends with a crash when they finally have to join the real world and find that employers want people with skills not soft fuzzy feel good awareness of their oh-so-hard done by heritage.

It will all come crashing down but the damnable thing is the amount of money that will be wasted before they finally admit defeat.

Some may want to call me a word that ends with "ist" and they are welcome to, as the word is realist.
