I am in the market for a new laptop and just came across some of these units and wow, are they power puppies. But expensive. I know that they are essentially gaming machines, and I do not game at the moment, at least. I really like the key board on one of the units priced at $1500. But are they reliable? What is there history like? Is it reasonable to buy more computer than I need?

Any input would be appreciated.

They're reliable but unless you want laptop gaming (and laptop gaming is always way behind desktop) I wouldn't waste the money.

Alienware is very reliable and as you already know they're known for building gaming laptops. The company was independent until a few years ago when they were purchased by Dell and turned into Dell's gaming laptop division. Alienware's reputation is solid but the laptops are expensive -- primarily because discreet GPUs are expensive. If gaming is your thing then a desktop would be much better value.

Always in the Groove...
If you don't want to go the Alienware/Dell route, take a look at Origin PC. This company is new company started up by the guys who originally started Alienware after they left the company after the Dell buyout. I haven't bought one from them, but I have heard decent things.

Never knew that. Might have to take back what I said about reliability.
Haha. Alienware has always been overpriced both in the laptop and desktop markets. If you don't plan on some serious enthusiast level online gaming, then don't waste your money on a gaming rig. Do a checklist of what is important to you then do extensive research. I build my own pc's and have always found that i can build the exact same system as a branded gaming system for heck of a lot less money.

If you don't game then don't look at Alienware. If you're more interested in durability and reliability, then look at Lenovo Thinkpads. So good that they're on the International Space Station. (At $10,000 /lb for shipping, they better be!)

Got the message and thanks for it. I am not a gamer, just a business guy who serfs a bit. Sounds like lenovo is good. But I liked their old keyboards better than the chicklet ones. Anyone know where I can get the X220 with the old keyboard. Not sure if Lenovo still makes them. I think not.

AlienWare caters to gamers. If you don't game don't bother with AlienWare.

FWIW ASUS is rated better than Lenovo.
