(200 km/h on FINCH ?!)

A family originally from Cambodia was returning home from temple late Saturday when a BMW, going up to 200 km/h with a suspected drunk driver at the wheel, hurtled into their minivan, cracking it in half and killing three people.

Hon To, 44, and her 24-year-old daughter Khan (Christine) Taing were pronounced dead at the scene of the horrific crash just before midnight on Finch Ave. W. at Tobermory Dr., said family member Yun Ho.

Taing was studying nursing at the University of Toronto, he added.

The other minivan passenger pronounced dead at the scene was a female family friend and fellow worshipper about to be dropped off at her home, Ho said.

To's husband, Pho Taing, 43, is in hospital in critical condition, as is a fifth passenger of the Honda Odyssey, a woman. Police said this afternoon that one of them is in "grave" condition and likely to die while the other is expected to survive, but wouldn't identify them.

The three dead were all thrown from the cracked-open minivan. Traffic officers were stunned by the wreckage, saying it's the kind of destruction seen occasionally on highways but not on a Toronto street. The van was turning when it was hit.

Jenny To, a friend of the 24-year-old victim, told the Star this afternoon that Taing was a "social butterfly."

"Any time we felt lonely we would call each other," she said.

The 21-year-old driver of the BMW suffered non-life-threatening injuries and is in police custody in hospital. Police say he will be charged in the crash.

Moments before the impact, the westbound BMW flew past a police cruiser heading east on Finch, said Sgt. Tim Burrows of Traffic Services. The officers witnessed the crash in their rear view mirror, he added.

The BMW was "out of control" and continued about 100 metres after smashing the minivan in two, Burrows said.

Police believe the BMW's driver had been drinking. The man has been investigated for drinking and driving in the past, Burrows said, though he could not confirm any prior convictions.

"All in all, this was an absolutely atrocious night on our roadways," Burrows said, adding that at least half a dozen other drivers were arrested for drinking and driving offences.

"Drinking and driving is a no-brain issue," Burrows said. "Once you've added alcohol to your system, driving should be out of the equation."

This afternoon, the front of the minivan lay on grass between the sidewalk and road, wires and metal protruding from its open end. Firefighters cut one piece of the van apart, removing its contents.

Finch was closed between Sentinel Rd. and Driftwood Ave. as police investigated.

It just makes one shake one's head. Nothing that is done to the driver of the BMW will bring back those he killed.

Quite amazing that the BMW was going 200 km/h when its driver hits a stationary minivan, cut the minivan in half, and the BMW driver has non-life threatening injuries. From an engineering perspective hats of to BMW.

That said, while I oft advocate high highway speed limits for powerful cars onhere, this wasn't on a highway. On a highway cars don't stop in the lanes to make left turns accross the other lanes. 200 km/h speed on a busy city street like Finch Ave is insane to drive at. When the BMW driver sobers up he will have three (possibly four as another minivan occupant is in grave/critical condition) deaths on his conscience.

I have not yet discovered the name of the 21 year old man despite hearing several media outlets. Why is that?

It wouldn't surprise me if it turns out we haven't learned the drivers name yet because someone in his family has the influence too keep his name out of the news.

It reminds me of a similar situation I read about, I think it was in the UK.

Daddy was a successful businessman, Junior was a steretypical rich kid, never had to lift a finger in his life, thought the world owed him everything.

Daddy bought Junior a Ferrari...

Junior was showing off, in a school zone, 100mph+ he lost it and wiped out a bus shelter, killing 2 old ladies instantly.

In court, Junior was charged with murder, and convicted. The judge justified this by saying driving at that speed in that environment showed such a blatetnt disregard for the lives of others, he could only see it as premeditated murder.

Then, in another bombshell, Daddy was charged as an accessory to murder, and convicted. Justification - he provided the murder weapon.

He was going 200km/hr in a 60KM zone. Unbelievable. The police probably don't want to release any more details than they absolutely have to in order not to jeopardize their case. This guy will be doing time, that is for sure.

Diehard said it best.

SON OF A F#$%% BITCH!!!!!!

There is no justification for this. Any amount of time the dude does will not bring back the people he needlessly killed. I could not even begin to think of a justifiable punishment. He better do some seriously hard time!!!!!!!!

This piece of shit should be charged with murder, and locked up for a long time. He should be banned from driving a vehicle for LIFE. Scum bags like him don't deserve the privilege of driving on public roadways.

sad - too many people killed by senseless people - they are the same people that show no regard for others on a consistent basis....this guy may be rich he may be connected but if he killed three people while drunk with a handgun he would be locked up for a long long time...driving, maybe a year, maybe he will get people to say it was so out of character a great citizen blah blah blah - big fricking deal - he was driving 200km in a 60 while drunk - he made a choice - the people he killed have no more choices to make - their families have to choose burial arrangements...there lives will never be the same - too bad he was not killed also!

NO hats off to BMW engineering. The minivan was cracked open like an egg, which would be typical of a side-impact crash, whereas the BMW had more strength in the longitudinal axis. I saw many years ago a Mecedes Benz hit broadside that cracked open and split in two. It is just simple mechanics.

That BMW driver should be put away for a long, long time, especially if it wasn't his first time with the Law regarding drinking and driving.

As Shakenbake said . No hats off to anyone.

I hope and pray this son of a bit*h gets raped in jail. Drinking and driving is wrong to begin with. And secondly, he thinks his BMW is the bomb and so he can drive like a maniac. Shame .

Its sad that the family died the way they did. Tragic story for sure.

Both being older cars, BMWs are stronger built than HONDAs.

The driver of the BMW survived for this very reason. To be punished.. Excellent.

Thoughts and prayers go to the family of those who died.

I was thinking the exact same thing...his parents probably have friends in high places or have lots of money.

It reminds me of the taxi driver who was killed by the 2 young adults speeding. I think all they got was house arrest and probation.
