On February 3, 2025, Al-Malahem, the official media arm of Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), issued a four-page statement in Arabic titled "A Statement Regarding the Death of the Aggressor against the Holy Quran in Sweden."[1] Dated February 2, the statement celebrates the death of Salwan Momika, an Iraqi refugee in Sweden who publicly burned copies of the Quran on several occasions. Momika was shot to death in his apartment in the Swedish city of Sodertalje on January 29.[2]
Referring to Momika as an "impure atheist who took refuge with the Swedish government, which is hostile to Allah and His messenger," the statement accuses Momika of having "fought" Allah. It mentions that he "assaulted the book of Allah many times" and threatened to burn it again on the Muslim holiday of Eid Al-Fitr, claiming that while Momika thought he would be able to escape "Allah's grip," Allah punished him "from where he did not consider."
AQAP congratulates the Islamic ummah [nation] on the "victory of our Holy Quran… the source of our pride and glory," describing Islam as the "religion of humanity's nature, which guides it to righteousness in all aspects of life." Claiming that "satanic enemies" seek to desecrate the Quran, curse the Prophet Muhammad, defame Islam and violate its sanctities in the name of "freedom of expression," the group argues that "it is actually the freedom to insult Islam, its rituals, and people." It further argues that this "despised freedom" applies to Islam only, stating: "If one wants to criticize or refute their false beliefs, bad habits, and low, shameful morals, they do not call it freedom of expression, but rather unite and declare war on him in the name of defending the freedom of belief."
The group cites Osama bin Laden, who stated in response to caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad, "If your freedom of speech has no limits, then let your hearts open to our freedom of action." It alleges that "enemies" dare to perpetrate such "heinous crimes" against Islam and its sanctities due to insufficient Muslim adherence to the tenets of Islam, reinforced by "tyrant rulers" who have betrayed Islam and shari'a, and their "humiliating subordination to the West."
Declaring Momika's death divine punishment, AQAP asserts: "The battle of Quran will continue until the day of resurrection." It urges Muslims worldwide to support and defend the Quran and take revenge on those who desecrate it and insult the Prophet Muhammad.
The statement concludes: "Those who dare to harm our religion should know that we are an ummah that does not ignore injustice, and we are willing to sacrifice our lives, sons, and all properties for our Quran and prophet… The Quran will prevail, no matter the enemies' plots and harm. The mujahideen will prevail, Allah willing, the Quran readers and memorizers… They should know that Allah is watching them… They need to choose between the two options and follow one of the paths: either repentance and guidance, or unbelief and wandering."
Following Momika's death, Islamic State (ISIS) supporters named anti-Islam figures in Turkey, India, and the UK as targets.[3]
