Al-Jazeera English could be broadcasting in Canada by fall

The English-language arm of the Arabic news network Al-Jazeera is formally applying for the right to broadcast in Canada, and local viewers could be able to pick up the all-news station by fall.

If it gets permission from the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission, the federal broadcast regulator, the English-language Al-Jazeera would be available by satellite for digital distribution.

"It is clear to us there is a significant demand for AJE [Al-Jazeera English] in Canada," said Tony Burman, the former head of CBC News who is now managing director of Al-Jazeera English, in a news release.

"Canadians want to understand the world in all of its diversity and cultural richness. Our website receives 22 million visits every month with over 50 per cent coming from North America, and our branded YouTube page is by far the most popular news site on YouTube."

Al-Jazeera English is an arm of Al-Jazeera, the news channel based in Doha, Qatar, that some consider controversial because of, among other things, its reporters' access to Al-Qaeda.

Al-Jazeera has an extensive network of bureaus in Africa, Asia and the Middle East, including places that get little attention from Western news services. It also was the only network to get its reporters into Gaza during the Israeli offensive on the territory in December and January.

Burman says Al-Jazeera English operates separately from the Arabic language station and many of the fears surrounding the channel, including criticisms that it acts as a mouthpiece for terrorism, were unfounded.

The network has a large Washington bureau and plans to open a bureau in Canada if it gets CRTC approval, he said.

Currently, its broadcasts are only available online in North America.

The CRTC has given Canadians 30 days to submit their comments as part of a review process of Al-Jazeera’s application.

and calling it drivel is based on what? Al Jazeera is consistently one of the few media outlets in the Middle East that isnt government controlled, that brings on for interviews all sides of political debates even having members of the Knesset and Israeli ministers, the single media outlet in that part of the world that has managed to piss off the wacko Islamists and the secular nationalists. They employed David Frost a respected Brit journalist, former US Marine Josh Rushing to give their analysis.

or you doing your usual hey hey pay attention to me I am the kid at the back of the class who thinks he is funny but no one else does.

Come on, both sides, Al Jazeera is a credible international news source,
on par with BBC. (and much more international than the US news organizations)

I second that. They're a little more slanted towards the arab side in any of its reportage on the middle east, but so what? I like to listen to their perspective on things. The only thing that irks me is that they seem to point out the flaws in other societies while conveniently failing to cover many of the problems in some of the arab countries.

Ummmmmmmm.......the fact that it's Al-Jazerra? Need you really say more? Al-Jazerra is nothing but a propaganda machine against western civilization. Joseph Goebbels would be proud of them.

Goebbels would also be proud of FOX News and MSNBC.

As for the rest of it, you don't know what you're talking about.

The fact that President Obama's first interview was with Al Jazeera would have to give it some credibility, no?

Oh yeah, I forgot. Obama is a secret Muslim. ;)

Funny, I was thinking the same about you.

At least he offers an opinion. I have yet to see you offer anything but nonsensical rants against him. Do you have an opinion on anything other than LancsLad's character?

Don't bother to answer, my question was rhetorical. I will be very surprised if you are still here this time next week anyway.

I don't recommend you get into a battle of wits. You're clearly unarmed.
