Yes, I agree that Air Canada "service" for the most part sucks ass big time. They've fucked me around often... and I do a fair amount of business travel in my 30 years of adult life... However... Having attained the level of elite status, they DO relax they're service levels to some degree...
I recent had a scheduled business trip to Las Vegas for an industry trade show. My flight was booked months in advance, and I've been on this same trip literally dozens of times. My flight was always a later evening flight, say around 8:00 pm. With the time change and flight time, I usually ended up checking into my hotel around 11:30 pm. This time, I figured same deal, right? Wrong...
My travel agent booked me on the 8:30 flight. Having been on that trip so often, I just put my ticket confirmation in my travel portfolio and waited for the day of. Now... it just so happened that this flight was booked on Family day, so I figured I had a nice leisurely day... sleep in, nice breaky, lounge around a bit, pack my bags etc... I even booked a session with my favourite SP for later in the afternoon! So the day progressed pretty much as I had planned, and at about 12:30, I go to Air Canada's website to check in on their web site. Error message. Hmmm strange. I check my ticket confirmation again. It is then that I realize that unbeknownst to me at the time, the evening flight no longer exists, so my flight was booked for 8:30 AM not PM! I missed my flight by 4 hours! I quickly pack up my car, fire off a text to SexySpinner explaining that I hafta cancel, and dial the 1-800 number for Air Canada on my hands free... I'm on hold the entire time to the airport and finally Dave comes on. I explain the entire situation, and take complete responsibility for my own fuck up, and plead with the guy to somehow get me to Vegas today. He puts me on hold... I'm actually WAITING in the airport parking lot at this point! He finally comes back on with a solution. He can get me on the 4:00 pm to Calgary and then the 7:45 from Calgary to Vegas, landing at about 9:00. Perfect! Then he says it'll cost $638! $438 difference in cost, plus $200 flight change fee.
Then I switch hats from idiot traveler to negotiator. "Dave", I say, "you gotta help my out brother..." I travel Air Canada all the time, (give him my AP #), check my travel history, blah, blah, blah... It took me an additional 10 minutes but I talk him out of changing me the extra $638.
Yes, Air Canada sucks... but even a stopped clock is right twice a day.
