If true, a smart move on Ahmadinejad's part.

The U.S. really should stop being so lead-footed with this fellow and start engaging in some one-upmanship with him.

I mean, really, the U.S. has a stated goal of getting Iranian cooperation on Iraq. At the very least, Rice should be meeting with him.

It doesn't matter that he's a Holocaust denier. The U.S. should be better at playing his game than he is.

If he wants to see the WTC site, I'd have taken him there, given him a personal 4 hour tour, introduced him to families of the deceased, and stood there until he denounced the attack.

And then I'd press him to start working jointly with the U.S. on Iraqi security issues - something which really is important to both sides. A more peaceful Iraq will be an Iranian ally. A more peaceful Iraq gives the U.S. the chance to claim final victory and leave.

Don't get me wrong, Ahmadinejad is a bomb. But the U.S. is missing an opportunity to try to defuse him.

Not surprisng since Ahmadinejad is dealing with 'bush league' players.
Dubya plays poker while Ahmadinejad plays chess.
Don't forget the Persians invented chess.
Ahmadinejad is running circles around Team 'w'....

Letting him into your country

is a good thing.

It shows your nation does have some understanding of the notion of freedom and freedom of speech - even when that speech is from a hatemonger.

The U.S. should use him politically, the way he uses them.

I'm not saying he is, I'm saying he's visiting an institution full of dictators voting on resolutions that no one listens to.

TQM, on a political level I think you're right. Allowing Ahmadinejad to visit the site, even though his motives are obviously disingenuous, would be a smart move politically.

There is something you havn't considered though. It sends a distressful message to the survivors of those lost on that day.

Dignity should always trump politics.

I don't think his motives

are entirely disingenuous even though he obviously has other motives as well.

Nobody is thinking Iran had anything to do with 9/11, not even Bush. But further, I do feel that dignity requires that every Nazi be given a long tour of every gas chamber.

Let's remember dignity cuts both ways. The U.S. allowed neo-Nazis to march in the predominantly Jewish neighbourhood in Skokie, Illinois. There is dignity in defending the right to assemble and the right to march, even if the assembly and marchers are fucking lunatics.

otb,

If Ahmadinejad wants a tour of the WTC, I'd give him the longest hardest tour of his life, including meeting the victims' families (if willing) over and over and over.

I'd let them quiz him, and possibly berate him, for some of the foul things he's said. And I'd let him express himself - give him the chance to say the right thing - but be ready to mock him if doesn't.

If he says the right thing, you have something to build on. If he doesn't, you've more ammunition against him. Hard to lose by calling the bluff.

Very true but sadly far to creative and cerebral for the likes of Team 'w'.
.....way out of their 'bush league' mentalities.....
