Adele is getting some flack for wearing jamaican flag bikini and bantu knots in an Instagram post marking the canceled Notting Hill Carnival festivities. They say she is appropriating the culture.

The Notting Hill Carnival celebrates Caribbean and Black culture in the U.K.

I don't see a problem with it, there are black women that have straightened their hair and dyed it blonde ( eg. Beyonce)and asian women dying their hair blonde also, aren't they they are appropriating the white culture then?

Every one can wear their hair and dress anyway they want.

It's only cultural appropriation when a dominant culture does it. So, if an Asian man or women wears their hair in dreadlocks, it's still not acceptable. The examples that you give are acceptable because it's assimilation by a less dominant culture. Not my definitions, BTW! IMO, it's all nonsense. Trudeau doing brown/black face is cultural appropriation and racist!

Cultural appropriation is amazing. As long as you don't claim to have invented it or start
speaking in a Jamaican accent or something then we're all good. Otherwise we wouldn't have
Elvis and Eminem, you would only be able to eat pizza in Italy, etc.

Americans really need to stop projecting their bs on the rest of the world, they are the biggest party poopers, let me tell you as someone of British descent and anyone who has spent 5 minutes at the Notting Hill Carnival will tell you this is completely normal and embraced. Anyone else getting really tired of how this board has become just one of the left and right in the US going at each other, dear lord the politics section is just the evidence of that. Why are Americans even allowed on this board? I have tried to access this site travelling internationally and it is not available, it should be so for that lunatic country south of the border.

It's all a non issue, black people wanting straight hair, cultural appropriation, no.
White people doing braids, cultural appropriation, no.

Be offended by it or not, it's really a non issue.

What I think is sad and hilarious is someone saying that they "worship" another person ie Adele "worshipping" Beyonce and the whole "King" and "Queen" stuff, it sounds so stupid and it's language like that which puts a person into a different level than another and nobody is better or higher or however you want to express it.

Fuck man, I miss the 90s.

Cultural appropriation has been going on since the beginning of the human race. If people never mixed cultures and learned new things our race would have died out long ago.

She was more likeable when she fat. Back then she was relatable and avoided controversy.

Black women HAVE to straighten (or have a Euro-centric look) their hair, or wear a wig or weave. They aren't allowed in a lot of work places if they don't. That's bad comparison.

With that being said, all Jamaicans are not Black. I have no issues with how she dressed.

The black community is tired of people like Miley Cyrus who used black culture, and then dropped it when it was convenient. This is the source of the outrage.

If kids dress up as eskimos, native indians or arab sheiks for Halloween is that considered cultural appropriation and frowned upon?
