This is an editorial written by an American citizen, published in a Tampa newspaper. He did quite a job; didn't he?

IMMIGRANTS, not Americans and Canadians, MUST ADAPT.

I am tired of this nation worrying about whether we are offending some individual or their culture. Since the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, we have experienced a surge in patriotism by the majority of Americans and Canadians. However, the dust from the attacks had barely settled when the "politically correct" crowd began complaining about the possibility that our patriotism was offending others. I am not against immigration, nor do I hold a grudge against anyone who is seeking a better life by coming to America. Our population is almost entirely comprised of descendants of immigrants. However, there are a few things that those who have recently come to our country, and apparently some born here, need to understand.

This idea of America and Canada being a multi-cultural community has served only to dilute our sovereignty and our national identity. As Americans and Canadians, we have our own culture, our own society, our own language and our own lifestyle. This culture has been developed over centuries of struggles, trials, and victories by millions of men and women who have sought freedom.

We speak ENGLISH, not Spanish, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Russian, or any other language. Therefore, if you wish to become part of our society, learn the language!

"In God We Trust" is the U.S.A. national motto. God Save the Queen is sung in Canada. This is not some Christian, right wing, political slogan. We adopted this motto and song because Christian men and women, on Christian principles, founded
this nation, and this is clearly documented. It is certainly appropriate to display it on the walls of our schools. If God offends you, then I suggest you consider another part of the world as your new home, because God is part of our culture.

If Stars, Stripes and a Maple Leaf offend you, or you don't like Uncle Sam, then you should seriously consider a move to another part of this planet.

We are happy with our culture and have no desire to change, and we really don't care how you did things where you came from. These are OUR COUNTRIES, our land, and our lifestyle. The U.S.A. First Amendment and the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms gives every citizen the right to express his or her opinion and we will allow you every opportunity to do so. But once you are done complaining, whining, and griping about our flags, our pledge, our national motto, or our way of life, I highly encourage you to take advantage of one other great American and Canadian freedom, THE RIGHT TO LEAVE.

Don't flame me as this is directly from the newspaper. It does make some interesting points, what do you think?

This sounds like another moron.
We speak ENGLISH, not Spanish, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Russian, or any other language. Therefore, if you wish to become part of our society, learn the language!

First, Spanish should be the official language of the Southwest since the Chicanos were already living on that land before the westward expansion and the annexation of former Mexican territories. French is the official language in Quebec. So screw the "We speak English" crap.

Secondly, the US and Canada belongs to the Native North-Americans. Everyone else benefited from the systematic genocide of Native North-Americans.

Does this baffon see the irony in this statement?

If Stars, Stripes and a Maple Leaf offend you, or you don't like Uncle Sam, then you should seriously consider a move to another part of this planet.

So pure bred Polynesian-Hawaiians who want to secede from the USA should go where?

Culture isn't static. Cultures all over the world are influenced by each other and they evolve over time.

This view would probably prove popular with many Canadians and Americans. Problem with popular views is that they're usually reductionist and try to address a complex issue with two dimensional thinking.

What the writer says makes sense, IF you buy into the idea that society is a static never changing thing. It isn't. People have the right to be themselves, and determining what that means is often a difficult and complicated job - not to be resolved with silly little pieces like this one.

Should people learn to speak english if they plan to live here? Yeah. Should a Sikh have to remove his turban when entering a place that requires head gear to be removed? No. You can't make one broad generalization to govern such things.

It is precisely the kind of attitude that this article presents that makes me want to curl up with a nice bottle of scotch and get myself into a nice oblivious stupor (some might suggest this is my natural, undrunken state but I'll forgive them).

Pure nationalism. Pure trash. But sadly a popular opinion...

People like this probably miss the residential schools we "re-educated" the native people in. They probably pine for the days where all we had to do with a culture that disagreed with ours was send in the diseased blankets, then let a redneck army and the Church mop up....

In a trap
A Global Vision!

Evidently, neither the author, nor those who support his premise, have the ability to think on a global basis!
We are but one, inhabiting this sad, sick and sorry planet!
Move beyond self and enjoy what is left of the world!
Self esteem, self agrandizement, even self pity....curses of mankind!
Move on! Move beyond! We're only here for a short time!

Well...

English is NOT the official language of the U.S. In fact, there is none. It is the defacto standard, but it seems that may be subject to change, as the Spanish speaking community is the fastest growing segment of the population.

It is easy to blame changes on new immigrants. But it seems the existing white citizens are the ones taking up one cause of another to bring about these changes. Think they must receive tax money and do this stuff full time.

It was likely a bunch of white people that decided to call Toronto’s Christmas tree a holiday tree.

I guess I'd want to see if this article actually was published in a newspaper. It does not seem professionally written to me.

That having been said, there's some validity to the language issue. I try not to be too reactionary and narrow-minded but spend significant time in Canada (a truly great country) and you'll see what happens when the line isn't held on a single language for official communication.

The whole French/English thing is a major hassle & expense to business owners (especially small business) and has ended up actually curtailing opportunities for employment and business growth.

We in the U.S. shouldn't be jerks about this kind of thing, but we should certainly learn from the mistakes of our neighbors...

Dynamic

What make's the US (and Canada) different is that they have dynamic cultures that are refreshed with every new wave of immigration. That's what makes our cultures different than the stale cultures of the mono-ethnic countries of Europe and Asia.

I think this dynamic is the single competitive advantage of our societies, our ability to re-invent ourselves. I heard once (warning, unsubstantiated statistic) that 50% of the PhD students in the US are foreigners. You can take this two ways, that the US is funding the education of foreigners or that the US is getting the cream of the crop to move to the US (and I bet a significant portion stay).

Who cares what language you speak as long as you create value. Have you ever thought how much easier it is for an English speaking tourist to travel than any other language? I sincerely doubt that the US will move away from English, but I do believe we will adopt practices and language of many immigrants (you can easily speak Yiddish in NY if you like).

Go to Miami and talk with recent immigrants from Cuba, you will never find more patriotic Americans!

The use of languages other than english , spanish and chinese may continue to decline as the global community continues to become a smaller place . Maybe not...... but it is a real possibility .I wonder how Quebec will feel about the path that their politicians have sent them down in about 50 yrs . First the church put them behind the times economically ( that was just for you Goober lol) and now the language police .

Even better... The RCMP having to change it's uniform just for one of them who wanted to join. That still pisses me off. A friend married a Sikh woman and the men had to wear bandannas on their heads while in their temple. It just kills me how these people, not just Sikhs, come to our country and expect us to change. No one asked them to come here. In a way it's kind of ironic. Now we get some sense of what the Native Peoples have gone through.

Just so those who opposed my view on Sikhs wearing turbans won't take my silence for agreement, I thought I'd throw another two cents in.

First, though I recognize the validity of the observation that other lands are not as tolerant as ours, I have to say, 'So what'? Are you advocating that we comprimise our own beliefs to play tit for tat?

Second, specifically with regard to the turban thing, you have to remember that for a Sikh the turban is an important religious symbol, whereas removing your hat in a veteran's hall is a tradition of respect. Most would agree that an article of personal faith outweighs politeness. The fact our country has an enlightened outlook capable of recognizing those degrees of difference should be a source of pride.

Do you condone Sikh children being allowed to wear their Kirpans to public schools? It is a religious symbol, but it is also a weapon. Would it be any different if I started my own religion and mandated that my followers and I are to carry around M-16s? Would I then be given the same treatment?
