I just gave an old laptop to a friend of mine, for her kids to surf the net with. When I had it I had no problems, I had the system wiped clean, and everything re installed. When Videos play now, they all play like they are in slow motion. Any idea what the problems and how to fix it.

Yeah. Kids + net = 10,000 useless apps and addons running in the background. And that's a best case scenario. Quite possible that the laptop is bloated with viruses and spyware above and beyond useless "fun" things kids click on without thinking. Check the task manager and see what's running and how much processing power it is using up.

First, shutdown and uninstall any unwanted applications as noted above. Clear the history and cookies of all browsers.

Install CCleaner and let it clear the unwanted trash in your browsers and temp folders. Also select Tools->Startup on the left and uncheck any programs that you don't need to start when you login to your computer. Afterwards, install Malwarebytes free version, scan your computer and let it fix things.

Now restart your computer, update the Flash version from Adobe's site and that should hopefully help.

Also depends on how old laptop is.
What speed CPU it has, how much RAM etc? If it is really that old is could have problems playing more demanding apps/files & HD files today.

There are a few things to watch out for when wiping and re-installing the basic system. Often, drivers may not be optimized or may reset to a default software decode rather than taking full advantage of the available hardware. Try googling the laptop model with terms such as "enable hardware acceleration" or "enable video codec" or similar.

Install Linux on the system if it's an oldie. I'm blown away how Linux manages hardware with drivers and has things running incredibly well. Friend is a programmer and introduced me to Linux. While I still have and use windows 7 I may be persuaded to switch to Linux in a few years myself.

Linux ROCKS!!!

I began to migrate to FREE Linux when Vista came out. All self taught, with excellent help given from the various Linux help Forums. At this point in time Linux is used 99.99% of the time. Don't miss or need M$ anymore. Can do it ALL with Linux. Moving to FREE Linux was the BEST move I ever made!....

I'm gonna very seriously consider it, all depending on what happens after Windows 8(.1). If they keep up the tile crap, I'm out. I just want simple, nothing complex, I don't want overly integrated social crap (spybook, twitheads, instagram, etc).
But so far, I love my desktop/Windows 7 build with SSD. Much cheaper than any Mac and runs faster than any Mac I've come across. My friend insists I dual boot with Linux, but I refuse to. lol
Ideally if I could run Photoshop flawlessly on Linux, that would sway me a whole lot more. WINE doesn't do a great job for me, so until that is fixed........

what os is it running? What are the specs? Go into your bios and set it to boot from cd drive first. Then try out a few linux distros. Knoppix was the bomb back in the day picked up every piece of hardware even the wireless card. Mint is the current distro of choice. If all else fails back up your shit and wipe it. Start from scratch. Aka a clean install

ps re vid card. Is it a know manufact? If so go to their website and see what they have for you regarding drivers. Make sure you have your model # with you or the serial.

good luck

I dual boot all my PCs. It's not that hard and you get the best performance out of both M$ and Linux. Didn't want to get a new PC and scrap out Windows that was paid for, so dual boot worked out best IMHO.

Put a SSD in my i7 desktop as a boot drive with only Linux on it. It freakin' FLYS!!! It installed the Linux OS in 8 minutes!!!
Kept W7 on a mechanical HDD. This made both OSs available whenever desired with no problems.

Never used Photoshop. There are Linux equivalents like Gimp for the little I use them. Never got into WINE because I wanted to make a clean break from M$ and the Linux Help Forums always said there are Linux equivalents for any M$ program or app if you ask them for guidance.
